camaros you got to remove/losen the radio/hvac trim or its vise versa i cant remember and i should i just did it a few days ago, both ways LOL, not sure about the birds hope, but i figured i would try to help
Re: stumped how do you remove the shifter plate?
Wiring might hinder it from coming out as well. I know on my old GTA that was the problem and had to remove the brace on one side to get it out. Not the biggest problem but a problem none the less. If all the screws are removed then look for wiring, the radio trim or pod for that matter, handbrake handle etc.

Shot of underneath of an automatic shifter plate (85-92 i believe), there are only 3 pressure clips, 2 right behind the shifter, and 1 underneath the ashtray, and only 3 screws, 2 underneath center console lid and again 1 underneath the ashtray. After that it's just convincing the part that it wants to come out, only real wires that would prob give you a slightly hard time are the cig lighter ones, i don't think there is much for the shift indicator light to get caught on. Good luck!

Re: stumped how do you remove the shifter plate?
You have to remove three (maybe two) bolts from the console, remove the staple from the back side of the shifter ****; remove the three bolts holding the trim on around the AC/Radio, and the three or four bolts around the ashtray/shifter. The trim around the AC/Radio and be tricky. Tilt is up at a 33 degree angle and pull towards the passenger side.
Good luck

This is where it kinda sucks to have a car that's in good shape, because if it was crappy I could've just hit it with a prybar & I would've been further ahead with my swap by now...

there's 3 bolts holding it in 2 by the armrest 1 under the ashtray take the radio trim off and you should be able to wiggle it loose, there's wires connecting hooked up to the lighter and the switches but you should have enough slack to get it up and disconnect them

Re: stumped how do you remove the shifter plate?
Yeah, the problem that I'd been having was that it didn't want to wiggle at all, it seemed as though it was bolted in, & I couldn't FOR THE LIFE OF ME see where it could be bolted...

Thanks for the info though, it's dead-on accurate.
