flip panel in cargo area

I was at my local Parts yard this week and found in a GTA one of those flip panels that cover the storage area in the back of the car. Are these things rare at all? I haven't seen them much. Will they bolt into other cars that didn't come with it? These may be dumb questions I couldn't get the hatch open to see how hard it was to remove. My 85 berlinetta had one but I never thought much of it. I did like it though. I'm just thinking im might recover it to my interior color and put it in my car.

Thanks

Re: flip panel in cargo area

There is a difference in the rear plastic in the trunk - the cars with the cover you describe come with a rear plastic piece that has more lip to it to support the cover. Also, if you have a hatch motor and the donor car doesn't, it won't fit without modifying it. My 1992 has the rear hatch motor, and I'm trying to work one in, but my rear plastic doesn't have the lip for it to rest on either, so it's some meticulous modding to the cover. I figure I'll have to use some kind of support (like metal elbows or something) to support the weight of the cover, especially since the plan is to mount speakers into it.

I'm told that there were cars with the hatch motor AND the cover, but I've never seen one, and I've searched over a year for a setup for the rear hatch motor. I'll keep looking, but I'll also try to just mod what I have.

I dont know if they are rare at all but I've seen more cars that didnt have the flip panel than ones that did. I have one in my 86' though. I dont know if youll be able to use it, so check the carpet where it should be screwed in at. If you can feel things that feel like small brackets youll just need to poke holes through the carpet to screw the panel in. If you cant feel them then I guess you wont be able to. My car already had the flip panel so when I replaced the carpet I just had to poke holes. Also, they are easy to remove..just four screws I beleive.

Hope I helped a little.

Yes, I forgot about that. Since your car didnt come with the flip panel you wont have the lip for the panel to rest on. Sorry

Ha, I guess my car is rare then lol? I have the hatch motor AND cover..

Re: flip panel in cargo area

I've been looking for one that will fit with a hatch motor for the past few months and they are actually fairly rare.

If it's a GTA I would think it would have a pulldown motor, so I'd try and grab it. Even if you don't want it I'd buy it off you.

*Edit: If you decide to pull it, you will also need the entire rear plastic piece, and the brackets that connect to the sheet metal.

Its Tan interior. I'll check it out the next time I go to the J Yard. Is there any way to get the hatch open without the battery in the car?(if it has the electric pull down that is.

Sure, take a chisel and a hammer and punch through the lock cylinder, that'll open it up.
I installed one of these in my car a few months ago, if your car didn't come with it from the factory more than likely you'll have to fab up a mounting bracket, and then either weld it in place or jbweld it in place. and make sure to tape it in place first and test fit with the carpet back in place to make sure it sits flush and opens and closes properly. It gives the car a much cleaner look in the interior imo.

Did you reuse the stock rear plastic with the covor and just remove the lock? Hard to tell from the angle of those pics, but I don't see the shelf it would rest on.

Re: flip panel in cargo area

I didn't change any of the rear plastic, there is a small lip you can see in the open pic that works fine, and the lock was already removed when I found it.

I didn't drill any holes into the car I used to work next to a metal shop and they would let me do personal jobs there, so I made a bracket, drilled holes into it and took a bolt about an inch and a half long and welded it into the bracket.
Shape of said bracket:

______/---------------\_______ sort of.

Then I just jbwelded it in place after test fitting it.

Re: flip panel in cargo area

My car has the lip around the back section, dose that mean it would have had one of these from the factory?

Re: flip panel in cargo area

All third gens I've seen have had that narrow lip around the edge. The ones with cargo covers had a larger lip (see pic).

I was hoping I could just reuse that section from my car. Less stuff replaced makes it that much easier for me, so thanks for the info.

no, if you have 4 bolts sticking out of your carpet then you originally had one.

also, they mounted the delco-bose setup to those things if the car came so equipped with it. so those have holes in them to accomodate the system.

Yeah try your local junkyard like Mcgarnicle said, that will probably be your best bet.

Re: flip panel in cargo area

Well, I picked the flip panel up from the J-yard today. I haven't decided if I'm keeping it or not yet. I'll bring this post from the dead if I decide to sell it or not. It is tan interior on the flip panel but it is really nasty. (grease and oil) I grabed the part that it sits on also Apparently it was painted tan but is black underneath the tan paint. It is flaking off pretty bad. Since its black I'll probably keeping it and recovering the carpet.

The car also had one of those retractable sun sheilds installed in the back so I grabbed that to. Not sure I'm keeping that either but I doubt it. I need to look and see how hard it will be to install it in my car. Part of the handle is broken. I also don't know what it hooks on yet. I think it hooks on the hatch or something but I need to research that.

Re: flip panel in cargo area

For the roll shade, I don't know if it's ever been retrofit into a car that wasn't designed for it, but the cars that had it as an option had holes in the plastic and brackets for it to connect just behind the back seats.

I can get you some pics if you want them.

Re: flip panel in cargo area

I got the brackets that go throught the panels behind the seats also. I just don't know if I want to cut mine up or not yet. The hole was more than just a round hole it has 2 slots in it also that way it fits in a certain direction. What dose it attached to when streched out?

Re: flip panel in cargo area

When the roll shade is pulled out it attatches to the hatch itself, kinda hard to explain, just go out to your car and open up the hatch and look up by the plastic peice under the rear deck lid. If your car came with a rear shade it would have to notches in it that you could hook the shade by. If your car didn't come with the shade it will be smooth.
