instrument panel
well i have an 86 camaro and the instrument panel has the 85 mph gauge and no tac, and i was just wondering if i could take the instrument panel out of my 88 which has the 115 mph gauge and a tac and put it onto the 86.
ik it wont work all at once but is it still possable if i hook up a wire or two? and will the trans and engine even go faster then 85 without being hurt?

Re: instrument panel
It should work fine, assuming a few things. If your engine is a V8, you'll need a V8 tach, or if its a V6, a V6 tach. If your car currently has the warning lights for temp and oil pressure, instead of gauges, I'm pretty sure you'll need to swap in the correct sending units. They're cheap and easy to do, so that's not a big deal. There is a tech article on swapping in an IROC 145mph cluster, the procedure is the same:

Re: instrument panel
IT works. Atleast it did for me. Except I didn't plug the cable back in tight enough and had to do it all over again. D!@# it.

Re: instrument panel
ok cool,
still got a few questios tho 1 is i just reliezed the 86 r digital, so i need to replace the sendings units, but what bout the actucal censor and wiring? and is do i already have a tach hook up? or do i need to buy something tp put onto the motor? the article did help me but those r the 2 things am unsure of right now and seeing as how the 86 is my daily driver i dont/cant have it not working

Re: instrument panel
ok im back, and as i figured i couldnt find anything to help me, but i have discovered an intersting thing, whne i said digital guages everyone assumes that its full digital, but its not...hmm how do i discribe it...

ok now that i have found something useful from the searches
you see how the 140mph guage is, well on my 86 it goes to 85, now where the tach is that is the fuel guage, and the 3 little ones in the middle, those are there bout those are the digital ones, make sense? i mean they have the name/symbol, the numbers, everything like a regular guage, but instead of a needle, its lights...i should have a pic of it soon to show everyone what im talking bout

Re: instrument panel
With the exception of the Berly, there's nothing digital about Camaro clusters (82-89 the speedo head is mechanical, the gauges electric). The swap Ward and OS3 mention should work fine.

Re: instrument panel
ok thank you james c, but hopoefully one last question, doing this swap, will the 86 actually be able to go up to 115mph? with out anyhting messing up, i think it would be ok, but its always good to get second options. and one last thing, do i need to buy a tach setup to hook up to the motor for the tach on the cluster to work? thanks for the help eveyrone

If your car will do 115 or 145, the speedo will read correctly. Check Ward's link above for the tach info.
