Steering column swap possible? also, weird noise from rear

so ive got a loose tilt issue, it was missing one bolt, so i could only tighten two, now its loose again. looking at getting a column, but its out a vats car, my car has NO vats. isthis direct swap (i switch the ignition switches) going to work?
Weird noise: ive got a LG4 4 barrel in an 87 formula, every now and again i hear a weird noise from back by the gas tank area, almost sounds like a fuel pump...like WTf, its a carb motor, ive got a mechanical pump. any ideas here??

I have the same issue in the rear with the sound. I haven't found the cause, and haven't had the money to fix it if I did. Sounds like a deep groaning, right?

Your 87 Formula has an in tank fuel pump and filter even with the carbed 305, if its an original part in the car, it probably needs replaced. Several articles here on pulling the tank down and changing it out. I've just recently replaced the tank on my 87 Formula(wasn't leaking but it sure had a pile of crud in the bottom of it), new pump and filter-about $200 all together and an easy weekend's worth of work.

Locktite will work but do you know any trick to get that stupid ring back in?

So what you're saying is that even though i have a fuel pump on my engine (which is all i should need for a carb motor), i have one in the tank for some reason???? theres no fuse or circuit breaker for it in the fuse panel or otherwise. rather than dropping the tank and fixing a fuel pump i dont need (filter is on the carb, no inline filter is present), id rather just snip the wirse for it so i dont have that noise, OR my rich condition...

In my opinion, that ring is a p[ain in the ***.....locktite will work, i've got a column comming thats non tilt, i wont have to worry about it anymore :-) problem is, its out of a 5 speed car, so im not sure how all that is going to hook up with my automatic car..

I did not know that mattered as far as the column goes.

Re: Steering column swap possible? also, weird noise from rear

I believe that Pontiac went to an in tank pump to solve a vapor lock problem. The in tank filter on my car was just about totally plugged when I took it out, it was the original one since October 86 when I bought the car new. You may want to drop the tank for a serious cleaning anyway.
Anyway, 87 Formula's rule!
