anybody got any tricks to repair that little stow away bag on the roof console, mine has lost its elasticty and hangs down and looks dumb

 

I took mine apart, and put in new elastic - sewed it in the original spots with a heavy duty needle strong enough to poke through. It turned out good, but sorry, no pics - car is in a million pieces at the painter!

 

well camaro newbie. heres another question how do u get it off of the console itself?

 

take the cover off the light take the 2 screws out then the whole thing slides forward to the windshield

You might could try a little strip of black velcro.

 

Yeah sounds kinda strange but I do know a few other f body owners who also have never seen or heard of the overhead console

 

 

yea, i've never heard of that console too. i don't have one in my '92 RS. but now that i see it, i wish i had one. no place to put sunglasses I just leave them on the dash and i almost lost them out the window when i went around a corner. but that console looks really good.

 

maybe it's something they put in for the after-market T-top conversions? I've never seen a camaro have an overhead console like that.

 

mine is like that but where the bag is there is a piece of plastic. it looks like it might open but I haven't tried it yet.

 

It is a factory option.

 

The overhead console was available from 1984-87 in camaros and firebirds.It cost 50 dollars and was an option on all cars except berlinetta which it came as a standard feature.I installed one in my 86 Iroc T Top car.Its very easy to do

 

yea both my 87 bird and 87 Iroc have it(t-tops), i love that console, they also came with a flashlight which i don't have on either of mine but i have a friend who actually has it on his

Most people just trim that bag off when it starts sagging like that. Every once in a while I see a NOS one for sale on ebay. They sag like that just bust the elastic band just loses it elasticity after 15+ years.

 

yeah i just spent a while rebuilding my flashlight to work again. ( if your having problems try soaking all your metal contacts in hvac type acid) and i would love it to be that easy to snip the bag strap but where going for 100 point show car and where about 85% there. so im gonna sew a new elastic strap up there or at least have my girl sew it nah j/k shes the best

 

The flashlight is usually the hardest part to find for the overhead console.Currently I have about 12 of them in various condition

 

so thats what the headliner looks like, i bought mine with no headliner. what is all that towards the rear view?

 

No wonder there hard to find, Your hoarding them! and probably not the only one either.

 

I should put one in my 86...I have toyed with the idea before....

 

The round thing is a map light. Then there's 2 dial things that have a few different options like Anniversary, Mileage or something along those line and then numbers you can sping to whatever you want.

I added one to a car awhile back and my last IROC had it stock, but honestly I wouldn't bother now. It's a rather useless gimmick. The pouch is pretty pointless since anything that is in there slides out if you stuff the gas pedal. The date thing had my friends girlfriends birthday in it the whole time I owned the IROC since I bought it from him and never bothered to switch it.

 

From what I hear, the console is VERY useful when you want an aftermarket headliner to stay up. I have three Irocs with the console and I like it and I actually use the little scrolling numbers often. I also added one to my old '92 RS.

 

Since I got the vert I dont drive my t top iroc very much anymore.I use the scrolling numbers on the overhead console to keep track of my mileage and the date when I last filled up.Like most 3rd gens my trip meter doesnt work so it comes in handy for something.

 

I used to use mine in my old berlinetta to keep track of oil changes. I liked it for that. The Maplight thing fell apart for some reason alot. I actually have a flashlight since I'm planning on getting one to put it in my Camaro. It has "Camaro" written on it. There's one in my local parts yard. I just haven't gone back to retreive it yet.

 

granteed it may be a useless peice. but some of us ( the minority group) are trying to make everything 100 percent funcitional. for a 100 point show car. where 10 years away from classic state

 

My fathers 86 irocz with no t-tops has this piece in it also. It isnt a t-tops car either.

 

Yes there are 2 different versions.One for Hardtop and one for T Top

 

I have one for sale in the parts for sale section, if anyones intrested. I thought it looked to 80s for me, so I gota regular dome light.
