How do I tighten a steering column on an 89 firebird?
Hey guys im selling my car tomorrow but the buyer insists that i fix the loose steering column before he buys it. To tell you the truth I dont know what is really loose in there but if you grab the steering wheel you can take it and rotate the whole thing holding on to it. I went out today and thought I could fix it so I took of the front pad thing with the horn wires and took off a nut that I though held the thing together turns out it did nothing and I cant get it off. How am I gonna tighten it up? Any help would be great! Thanks

There's a tech article telling you exactly how to do this. Steering Column Fix
Read up on the article. You'll need a torx set and a specialty tool, the steering tilt pin remover or something like that. I'm pretty sure the local parts store might have one, or Snap-On's is 15 bucks online.

Just did this yesterday. Good info at --> https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/faq-...eels-like.html
Info included how to use a 8-32 UNC bolt to pull the pin, negating the need for the pin pulling tool. Worked great.

If you've never done this before and your in a crunch to sell the car in a certain time frame I would just knock $100 off the total price before I broke the column open.
You can do some damage in there if you don't know what your doing. Plus you'll need 2-3 specialized tools get to the bolts.
EDIT: I need to start looking at dates, the original poster created this thread on 7/30/2008......did you sell your car? How did it work out?

Dude this is an UGLY job if it goes bad. My tilt pins were in so tight all they did was bend bolts when I tried the reccomended bolt and socket method. Then I borrowed a snap on tilt pin remover from a local mechanic and that broke, but they way it was designed it broke off into the pin, leaving NO WAY to remove the pin. I went to the junkyard and paid 75 bucks for another column, and this one has loosened as well.
I kept the old one, think I'm going to try and get in there with a welding rod and just tack those suckers tight.
