speedometer/odemeter doesn't work

speedometer/odemeter doesn't work

hi guys, i bought an 86 firebird without the speedo working, do you guys know what to check or how to check the cable or gears related to the cable

Sorry, I can't recall off the top of my head. It may well be that your 86 is electronic, not cable driven. A search should provide the info you need.

behind the gauge cluster is a little plug in but you can follow the cable to the tranny but the only way to see it is to take it apart and i want that to be a last resort

But start at the tranny first and work up. Usually people unhook them to keep the documented mileage off of the odometer. At the transmission is where they usually do it. By the way, how many miles on the car?

111495, but that has been the mileage since at least 2004

86 shouldn't have a cable speedo. And if for some reason your speedo is pegged at top speed it wont work unless you pull it out and shake the needle so it sits at zero again.

there is a sensor in the tranny as well as a signal converter in the dash should be a little yellow box auto zone carries both 4 69 dollars apiece

is there a way to tell the sensors are good or not. $140 is alot to spend if i don't need to

personaly i dont know how to check them but i would say the sensor in the tranny im doing a trial and error on my speedo but mine is the sensor in the dash my speedo works but it flips back and fourth so fast i cant read it
