Autometer Gauge Problems
Autometer Gauge Problems
I got a situation-
I don't know how to hook up the Cobalt electronic Speedo from autometer. It says i need to attach the VSS signal wire to the SIG on the back of the gauge and then run a wire from the gauge to where the VSS signal wire came out of. Seems simple enough, however i dont know where the VSS signal wire is, what color anything.
Another problem: My oil pressure gauge is reading 100 at all times that ignition is on. Now the gauge comes with a new oil pressure sending unit, but once again i dont know where that is, the book says its on the back of the block. Well its not there. Anyone? There is a sensor coming out of the block directly above the oil filter, is that it?
3rd problem: where is the water temp sensor? Is it in between the 1st and 2nd plugs on the d/s?
Is anyone in possession of a adapter from a Cobalt fuel gauge?
Also, i was reading about quartz speedos, are those electronic?

Re: Autometer Gauge Problems
It sounds like the autometer speedo is electric. Your 87 Camaro uses a cable driven speedo. I have heard that all you would need to do is pull the cable out of the tail shaft and instal an electric VSS from a 90-92 camaro (not a 100% on that just heard)
2. Yes the sensor on the T-block above your oil filter is the sender just take it out and replace with the autometer one.
3. Yes.
4. not me
5. It should say on their website if its cable or electric
hope this helps.

Re: Autometer Gauge Problems
I can help you with the oil press gauge. I just ran into this issue. You can not run it off the factory oil pressure switch located about the filter. Altho that sends a signal to your gauge it will not work for an autometer gauge. Also you can not remove the oil pressure switch as is a safety for your motor and is required for it to run. That switch is what tells the fuel pump to turn on once the motor builds pressure and kills fuel if it ever drops pressure. You can however run the supplied autometer sender. Behind the distributor there is an oil port, its on the china wall right behind the intake. I believe its 1/4 NPT thread. Just install the autometer sender there and wire the gauge to that.

Thats what the instructions show, but i wasn't sure if thats where i was supposed to install the new sensor, okay, so i install the sensor they gave me and run the wires from that to the gauge, and the old oil pressure just stays where it is? cool that actually makes sense. Thanks so much, My car is almost done now with all this info. You guys here at TGO rock
