'82 Z28 guages in '91 RS

I have a 91 RS V6 (going to be swapping for V8 soon) and my donor car is an 84 Z28. I know the tach in a V6 will not work with a V8, I was wondering if anyone has tried using the tach from an earlier model to a newer one? My shop time is limited and I have not had the chance to remove the cluster from my 91 yet. I was really just wanting to know if I need to start looking for a 91-92 V8 tach or if the 84 would work. Thanks!

I believe the '91 uses an electric speedo and the '84 uses a mechanical speedo, so if you wan't to swap all the gauges that might be an issue. I have a '91 parts car with gauges... I don't know if they're v8 gauges or not. Is there an easy way to tell the difference?

Well I just want to change the tach, not the whole cluster. I guess you could find out what engine was in your parts car.

The gauges will not swap over.... They are not compatable. Save your self the time / effort and try to find a replacement tach or cluster from a 90-92 car instead.

He's right the 82-89 cluster is totally different than the 90-92. You can't just swap the tach. I don't know if the dash is different but I don't like the 90-92 yellow guages so I'd try a full swap but that may not be possible...???

Re: '82 Z28 guages in '91 RS

the entire shape of the dash, instrument cluster, and guages themselves changed for the 1990 model year, so even just the tachometer itself can not be swapped from an 84 cluster to a 91 cluster.

Re: '82 Z28 guages in '91 RS

Thanks guys, I finally got out to the shop to do some work on the donor car. Also I indeed realized the dash components are different. I read where the resistor can be changed for it to work on a V8, has anyone tried this? I mean it's worth a try if I end up with a V8 tach anyway right?
