Speedometer not working-Help!

I have a 91 Camaro RS with 305 TBI and auto trans. The Speedometer does not work and neither do the odometer and trip odometer. Any ideas what I can get do to fix them? All my other gauges work fine and light fine. Also my driver power seat is not working-where is the fuse for the power seat?-hoping that it is only a fuse for the seat...Thanks in advance!

ITS YOUR SPEDOMETER GEAR YOU CAN GET ONE AT THE DEALERSHIP IT COST LIKE 6 BUCKS ITS LOCATED AT YOUR TRANSMISSION YOU SHOULD SEE A CABLE ON THE DRIVERS SIDE THAT GOES INTO THE TRANS UNSCREW IT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A WASTE PAN OR BUCKET TO HOLD ALL THE TRANS FLUID THATS GONNA COME OUT THEN REPLACE THE GEAR THEN REFILL FLUID AND YOU SET

Re: Speedometer not working-Help!

I believe '91s are electronic speedos... So, you won't have a speedometer cable, but a VSS instead. The VSS is located on the driver's side of the trans tailshaft. Unfortunatly, I don't know much about the workings of the third gen VSS. I would just first check to if it has come unplugged, although if it was I would think it would throw a code 24 (I think that's the one). Also, I think the VSS is driven by a standard speedo gear (at least that's how it was on a trans I got out of an '84 Berlinetta), so there could also be the possibility that the gear got chewed up (like ILUVMY89 said). Then there's the VSS buffer box... But, like I said, I would just start by checking the plug into the VSS on the trans.

As for the seat issue... The "fuse" is the lower of the two big silver 35 amp circuit breakers. The one labeled "PWR ACC." Here's a link to a diagram (it's from an '86 service manual I think, but most stuff if not all is the same). I think the breakers are auto resetting, and that same one covers the power door locks and rear defogger, according to this. I had a problem with my power seat, and it turned out to be that the contacts in the power connector under the seat weren't making good contact. So, you may want to check if you are getting power to that connector.

Re: Speedometer not working-Help!

Speedos in 90+ Camaros are electronic. The VSS seems to be a common problem. A search will provide a wealth of info.

Re: Speedometer not working-Help!

well I have a 91 RS and the guy I bought it from said he changed the speed sensor so I thought something else was wrong and changed eveything else and come to find out it was the vss it was about 120 from auto zone and takes about 15 mins to replace it. If you do a search on it you will find all the answers you need about it here this is bar none the best board I have been to.

I could be wrong but I think at least all the TBI and TPI cars have a VSS for the computer regardless of a cable driven speedo.
But check your vss first. Their are two of them so make sure you look at it first and remeber what it looks like if you are going to get a new one.
I would check to make sure it is plugged in first.
Also wouldn't hurt to make sure you speedo is plugged in too.

Yep, the cable driven speedo cars have an optical pickup VSS mounted right behind the speedometer.
