Gauges

Been searching through the boards looking at all the kinds of gauges there are. Seen a million different guys with autometer gauges, plenty with the Auto Zone addon gauges tucked onto the dash somewhere (like my oil pressure gauge lol), and then there's the guys still rockin the stock gauges.

Well, what I'm wondering is, are there any aftermarket vendors that sell the stock gauges, but with accurate readings and a pretty cool new look? While searching the boards I came across a guy's gauge layout that looks exactly like what I'm looking for, but I would like to get custom faces added in with a Trans Am logo of some sort. I love the stock gauges and I would like to have everything I need right in front of me without having to replace them with completly different aftermarket gauges like Autometer, the cheap addons, or having 2-3 gauges built into the pillar left of the dash.

Here's the pic of what I was reffering to...

Thanks in advance, and please, feel free to post any aftermarket gauge set up you've got going. I'd love to see your setup.

Re: Gauges

There's nothing available that'll directly replace a stock gauge.

Your picture looks like stock gauges with metal trim put around them.

Re: Gauges

If that's the case, then is there anything that can be done with the stock gauges that will get them all reading accurately? I was interested in swapping all of mine out for something newer and better, but I don't want to go with anything that would change the appearance too much. I like the stock gauges, but they don't display anything accurately other than voltage and fuel, imo.

My speedometer doesn't work at all at the moment (haven't diagnosed that problem yet), the tach seems pretty accurate, fuel and voltage are great, oil pressure just maxes out as soon as I start and stays there... never changes, and I kinda broke my temp gauge... broke the sensor off while changing the spark plugs...

That pic I posted have different gauges than mine. Probably just a different year though, haven't been around too many differeny third gen birds. Mine is an '86.

Anyways, yeah, is there anything to do with them to keep the stock apperance, but get a better use out of them?

Re: Gauges

You can narrow down the problem to either the sender or the gauge itself, and replace whichever you need to.

Re: Gauges

Would you happen to know why my Speedometer doesn't work? It has never even budged while I've owned the car. I've taken the gauge cluster out and cleaned everything I can clean, but I'm not sure what the problem is. It's an '86, so would that make it mechanical or electirc? I'm thinking it's electric because of the way the cluster "plugs" into the dash... but I could be wrong.

Re: Gauges

An 86 Firebird should have an electric speedo. If your check engine light isn't on, I'd suspect a problem with the speedo head rather than the sensor.

Re: Gauges

That light has been on since I bought the car as well. That as wwell as the Brake light for some reason. Brakes are fine though... even replaced the master cylinder a week after I bought the car.

So that means the tranny has a VSS, right? What do I check to diagnose a problem?

Re: Gauges

Try pulling the codes first to see if the computer is complaining about the VSS.

I honestly have no idea how to even go about doing that.

Flow Chevrolet says in their catalog that they "Exchange Thru AC Delco Repair Centers. Call for Price" http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/

Re: Gauges

What are you trying to show me on that site exactly?

Also, what years of Firebirds/Trans Am can I replace my stock gauge cluster with? For instance, could I snag a cluster from a 92 and pop it into mine and it work fine or no?

The cataloge says that you may be able to send your gauges in for repair to AC/DELCO. It says to call for pricing info. The web site is presented by Flow Chevrolet.
