The floors are so contoured, you'd never get it even close, nor looking even halfway decent. You'd end up throwing it all away & buying the correct stuff.

There's got to be a way. Custom interior shops do this sort of thing all the time. If I knew a good interior site I'd recommend one. You could try the chevytalk forums and post under interior, or _maybe_ autobodystore.com, but I think they only deal with bodywork.

To custom make some one-off set that fit our floor contours, would be so expensive you wouldn't wanna put your feet on it.

Actually I was at lowes looking at carpet for my house and seen a roll of black that looked VERY similar to the black carpet that is in my 82 Corvette.
It was so close that I would consider buying it to do panels for the speaker box in that car.....and this was unbacked house carpet.

It depends on how much time you have on your hands. It's going to save you a HUGE amount of time to buy a carpet such as an ACC that lays down nicely and has the heel protection, than to try to finagle a carpet not fit for the car.
I was helping my father at his body shop try to install a really cheap carpey into a 76 vette vert,we had so much time into trying to make that carpet look ok at best, the guy would have saved money just buying a decent carpet to begin with.
just my .02 from a guy who's been there done that.I'd rather be on the couch watchin TV with the time saved. LOL

Yes, I buy my carpet from custom auto carpet. All you get is square yardage rolled up. You must cut your own pieces by using the old carpet as a template. When laying out your pieces pay attention to the lay pattern. I customize third gens in the Cleveland Ohio area.
