Locks not engaging

I'm changing my interior from gray to black and while the panels are off I am addressing a few issues. This is an 87 with power everything.

Manually, my locks work perfectly but with I use the power buttons they do not engage. I don't know where to start because I can't get my head in the door so see everything.

Common problem with our cars. Clean with WD-40 and relube with white grease. You might consider doing the window tracks as well. As long as you're in there, check the following link for some ideas:

Yes, the actuators do function. It seems that they don't push the 90* rod its connected to up high enough...

Re: Locks not engaging

Since they are working then, the link James provided will probably get them back to working again.

I had the same issue with my 'bird on the passenger side. If you hammered on the button enough it would eventually lock or unlock.
Taken apart, cleaned all the old dirt and lube away from all the moving parts, used some Slip Plate to re'lube' (even though it's dry graphite) and never had an issue again.

in a word everything gets cleaned . then lube all pivot points , rollers & tracks , be sure to remove rubber drain plugs in bottom of door for drainage . ( you may find strange items in bottom of door ) . when dry & lubed re-install plastic sheeting before door panels . don't worry about old sheeting , throw it away . get new stuff from LOWES , HOME DEPOT , etc. . apply oversize section with hot glue gun , trim off excess with sharp knife . you will be amazed at the improvement . good luck .

Re: Locks not engaging

Also if it's not unlocking the passenger side door from the master switch, there might be a broken wire in the harness between the door and the body of the car on one of the sides.

Hope this helps.

Also it wouldn't hurt to pick up a test light if you don't have one to help chase down the problem area.

Re: Locks not engaging

Had similar trouble when installing a keyless entry on mine a year or so ago. Even after cleaning and relubing I wound up replacing the drivers side actuator. Still available from GM too.

Re: Locks not engaging

I have the same problem. I have to push the button 3-5 times to move the actuator a little bit at a time. its old solenoid man. I recommend new solenoids off www.rockauto.com or even autozone. swap one out, if it works then bam., if it doesnt just return to autozone and say that yo mixed years up on your car and you dont need the part anymore, get a refund. the white grease is a great idea. im going to do that to my window tracks, and save myself a a headache with slow windows..

Clean and relube. Chances are the locks are fine; they're simply having to work though 20+ years of gunk.

We carry the actuators too if you end up needing them.
