Help with black Tar-like patches

Hello, I need help locating a part/material for my car. The things Im referring to are the square patches of a sticky tar type substance that cover some of the large holes in the cars interior frame. You can see some near where the rear speakers are, and down near the floorboard in the back seat.

Small washers made of the same stuff appears to be used as waterproofing gaskets under the self thread bolts for side marker bezels and door mounted ground effects, etc.

Question is, what is this stuff exactly and where could I go about getting some more? Anyone have a clue about this stuff, the parts store guy knew what I was talking about, but he had no idea where to find it.

For something like what your talking about you can just use a normal sound deadening solution like Dynamat, Second Skin, or many others. They are an asphalt based insulator. Also you might try going to a local body shop as they have these panels for collision repair.

Re: Help with black Tar-like patches

During original assembly, this tar-like "stuff" was applied by
industrial caulking guns. As with many assembly materials/techniques,
the emphasis is on speed, rather that long-term servicability.
And you can find this stuff in places that will convince you the
union-hacks were amusing themselves with target practice.

For small things like bolts/nuts on exterior body panels,
a judicious application of silicone sealer will accomplish
the same thing.

For larger holes, get some thin sheet metal, secure it with
pop-rivets or small sh-met screws. Apply a bead of the
silicon sealer before final assembly.

It was hard to convince my son, that things DIDN'T need to
be re-assembled EXACTLY like the factory did. There are other
ways to accomplish the goal, that can be longer lasting, and
more servicable. Re-installing window regulators with 1/4"
bolts/nylok nuts, instead of big rivets is another example.
But that's what restoration is all about.

Good luck.

I bought the 'washers' new from GM. Check your dealership or simply purchase some 3-M automotive caulking, the strip kind, and form it yourself. I found the latter at CarQuest.

I managed to find the part number for the WA Seals, 20733729. The number is still good on the following site:

http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/

I paid $13.80 for 20 in 1999.

Re: Help with black Tar-like patches

Sweet!! I just ordered a big load of them, my ground effects and rear side markers both need those so now Im set. My local parts store didnt have dynamat or anything like it, the body shop had none either. I live in a tiny town in Arkansas so I guess I shouldnt be supprised.

Thanks a bunch for the help everyone, and thanks JamesC for the part number for those things. You have given me so much help on this car restoration Im gonna have to mail you a check or something when its done.

Thanks for the offer of a check, but, if you don't mind, I'd rather you send a shoebox of large denomination bills .

Re: Help with black Tar-like patches

go to Lowes and buy a product called peel and seal for covering those large holes it can also be used under your carpet as sound deadner.
