Steering Wobble. Where can I buy new bearings for upper column?
Steering Wobble. Where can I buy new bearings for upper column?
Guys,
I have a ton of wobble on my steering wheel. It appears to be only the steering shaft that is moving.
I tore it all apart yesterday down to the 4 tilt bolts. They were tight. My bearings were crap. I tried to make due and put all the little bearings back into the old worn out plastic holder but they started falling apart before I could get it back together. The bearing race refuses to stay on the lower portion of the housing where they meet the ball joint. There seems to be some space between that ball joint and the lower bearing when its all back together.
Is the ball joint designed to ride right up against that lower bearing? I know if I pull out on the steering wheel, everything seems to tighten up nicely but the locking plate is on correctly. So is there any way to get it tighter or should it be fine with a set of good bearings riding on the top and bottom?
Does anyone know where I can purchase new bearings. Aftermarket ones might be nice too if available since it seems the GM design doesnt hold up too well.
Please let me know if anyone knows where to get parts or if you have any ideas of other problems that could need fixing. I noticed a rebuilt upper column on ebay, maybe I can go that route, but would love to find the bearings by themselves since it will be much cheaper.
Thanks,
James
