I know there are threads about this but I was looking for a clear cut answer. I PMed Tony he hasn't gotten back to me. I want to replace the carpet throughout my car and have seen several different carpets for several different prices. I would like the entire car front to back with wholes already cut. where should I look for the best price and quality?? The second part is what about the "insulation" under the carpet. Does it come connected to the carpet or should I just dynomat it then put the carpet down?? Thanks for any help and suggestions.

The ACC carpets fit very well. You can either Dynomat it,they order the carpet with the jute backing or if you did the mass backed carpet you wouldn't need the Dynomat.

I can also send you a free color sample if you need to look at a red or gray etc.

We do have them available with the console sut out too. Not sure of your year ans application.

Your not going to find carpet with "holes" already cut. Your going to get a piece of molded carpet that needs to be trimmed to fit around the edges and console...and you'll need to cut the holes for the seat bolts.

Don't expect it do drop in place

 

A trick too when installing these is to warm the carpet up.It's starting to get cool out.

This can be done with lying it in the sun if it's warm where you live, using a heat gun or a steamer.

If you have a heated garage that'll help too.Basically this will help to make the carpet more pliable so it will contour to the floor pan better.

 

so then what is the difference between the console cut out version and non cut out version if you have to do the cutting anyway?

 

It's most likely going to be cut in the console area, but it's going to be undersized so your going to have to trim on it it anyways.

As I stated, your not going to get a piece of carpet that all you have to do is drop it in place and bolt / snap everything back in. There will be some work involved to finish the job. The carpet has about 3"-4" overhang all the way around so be prepared get your box knife out.

 

thats stupid, if i am going to be paying over 300 dollars for a carpet, i dont want to have to cut it up to make it fit...

 

I guess that's stupid then, been that way since i have bought them (20 years) and hasn't changed since.

 

HAHA this would be nice wouldnt it...BUT...no car is exactly the same. At a companies stand point could you imagine the amount of stupid calls you would get about holes being 1/2 inch off and blah blah. The reason they do it the way they do is to cut production costs and to fit the broadest range of cars. Overall it promotes happier customers and less hassle.

...IF you are not confident with your knife handling skills you could have a car shop do it but honestly its not hard to do at all. If your having a hard time figuring out where the hole is for the seat belts and so on put a bolt in there that sticks up ever so slightly. Then start with a small "X" cut and go from there. I put a new carpet in a buddies car for him along with sound deadener and everything. Mind you im only 19 and had no expeirence with it and it came out perfect. He takes it to shows all the time and everyone compliments him on keeping the stock carpet so clean(haha!)...ppl also compliment on how amazingly quite his car is when your in it. The sound deadener did wonders to the car.

Ya...well honestly could you imagine what the price would be if it was all pre cut to exactly fit YOUR car...omg it would be nuts. I would estimate a pre cut one all ready to drop in would be like 700 or so. That would be crazy lol

 

It's honestly not that bad to install. Mine took me an hour or two to get it fit and cut right. Another thing to remember is to pound/stretch it into place, makes it look alot better and smoother.

You will have to cut alot of the console section out...i think i cut atleast 5" off the back to make the console fit nicely.

 

I bought my carpet from rockauto.com, it was just over 300 bucks for both front and rear carpet. I did buy the premium "essex" type carpet though, the OE quality was cheaper. I prefer this type of carpet though, it's similar to what comes in newer cars. The OE GM stuff is very fuzzy, almost like the fuzz on a tennis ball, this stuff is not. It did already have the jute padding attached.

Cutting it out actually isn't all that hard. I had never done carpet before, and I managed to get it done in just a few hours. Just take your time, cut things undersize at first, them trim to an exact fit. Actually the hardest part for me was poking holes for the seat-belt bolts. You've got to be certain you're in the right spot, and cut the smallest hole possible so it doesn't show.

Also, wait for a good sunny day, and lay the carpet out on the driveway in the sun for an hour or so before starting. The carpet is easier to bend and work with when it's warm.

 

Search around for oem carpet,it is expensive, but it looks and fits the best, several aftermarket carpets just dont fit good like the original.

 

The ACC carpets are nice carpets.there are quite a few board members out here that have bought them.

Even an OE carpet should be installed in a warm garage, so that the wrinkles spread out easily.

 

hey does any1 know the square footage of interior carpet in 84 firebird cuz i plan on doing all interior myself with carpet and fiberglass. thankz tonz if u can help!!!!????!!!!????

 

I'm not sure,but I do know if you're trying to get a flat piece of carpet and mold it to the inside of the car using adhesive,you'll want throw yourself off a bridge within an hour ....trust me.

The ACC carpets come all preformed, so you can place it in and trim any areas that you need to,and call it a day. Just my .02
