has anyone here taken out their rear seat and left it out? im planning on having a cage and i dont want to put it back in, but i want it to look good. I was thinking i could fabricate something out of sheet metal that would look alright to cover up all the ugly stuff under the rear seats. has anyone done this? what did you do? thanks guys!

Very common & you can find it mentioned most when people talk about weight reduction. A will turn up a lot of those threads. Just have to keep narrowing down your search terms, to weed out the stuff that doesn't apply to your search.

I took mine out, but left the bottom cushions in, to give my 100lb Rottie a place to ride, other than the passenger side front seat.

 

If you go to camaroZ28.com there is a guy selling a set of seat deletes right now for $50. They are in a 4th gen, but I believe they are the same. Maybe others can back that up. The seller is sinister(something like that). I bought an adjustable panhard from him. Shipped quickly too.

I know there would be design logistics in a non-vert that would need addressing, but it's more food for thought.

 

What about fabbing something out of fiberglass, may be easier to shape? not sure though, my buddy does alot of fiberglass fabrication on his ***** and it looks good.

a company called Speed speciality used to have them, i think its the same person who is making the 4th gen ones.

I bought a set a long time ago, they were total crap and weighed more that the actual seats and belts. Not the way to go.

Im going to be making a setup for the back of my car, i removed the rear seats because they didnt clear my minitub, after im finished widening the rear interior panels, almost done, i can start on the seat delete part.

I might actually start today, come to think of it, the last interior part i have to make does not affect the floor section, and i have some free time.

Im using fiberglass, its easy to work with. You can make the basic shape out of a thin wood frame wrapped in fleece of some kind, or just use cardboard. The glass over it, sand, glass again, sand body filler, sand, ect repeat ect untill you are happy, then paint or wrap in vinly or carpet.

 

I bet they would fit just fine, since we very commonly put 4th gen rear seats in our 3rd gens. I know I've done it & had no complaints.

BUT.....The link we had. That place is WAYYYYYY over priced! Like $300 for an ABS splitter for LS1 4th gens? A piece of ABS plastic, for $300?????? I bet they could CNC 5 of them out of a 4' x 8' sheet of ABS. 1 sheet = $1800 for them????

Even that rear seat delete piece you had linked too, was WAYYYYY overpriced too. I could build some myself out of good carpet covered hardwood (which is probably all they are) or get some good, thick lexan/plexiglass, heat it up with a heat gun (that is how I made a new shelf in my freezer in my kitchen) & shape it yourself at home! Either way...MUCH cheaper!

If I was going to make a rear seat delete, I would probably make the part useful, maybe make the "flap" open and close so I can put tools or something back there...

 

Is that someone who tried to turn a Vert into a speedster ?!?!! Did they finish it ? If so, thats freaking awesome, the speedsters look stupid with their tops up.

 

Not tried. They did produce those. Autoform is probably the most commonly seen one (not sure if anybody else even offered the 2-seater conversions). That was an aftermarket conversion some dealerships offered.

Yes, but I would recommend putting the bolts in too.

 

well duh lol. the question was kinda directed to whether or not any mod or fab had to be done.

 

All 4 seats are a direct bolt-in fit.

 

I'm going to be building a sheetmetal framework with aluminum panels for the back of mine, going to be awhile, have to finish the suspension first... The upper bars for the 4 link are now where the seat used to be!!!! The aluminum panels will be held in with dzus fasteners to facilitate easier bar adjustment and make changing the center section on the rear end easier!!!!

 

Im very familiar with the existence of the speedsters, but what catches my attention on this one is that it seems to have an actual convertible top rather than just a bunch of snap points/buttons on a flimsy canvas top that I have seen on most of them.



Maybe its just me, but the blue one looks different.

 

Would the delete from the 4th gen fit our cars?

 

I don't see why not, since the seats fit. But the 4th gen seats are a bit narrower, so I dunno if the narrower width would show up with the rear seat delete panels.

But seriously....A delete amounts to 2 flat panels. Make them yourself out of MDF or plexiglass. Both of which are easy to buy yourself.

 

Something else, and it is optional of course. After removing the rear seats, you can see the two humps there on both sides on the floor. If you want to remove them, do something to cover your glass if you choose to use a cut off wheel/angle grinder. Nothing like little black pits in t-tops and windshields right?

Once those are cut out, it looks cleaner, and you can weld in patch panels to give a smoother look in the back there, and you wont see the drain plugs/panels that are probably hairy from the pad that was over them. This is all assuming you are going to take up that back section of carpet in that area. Good luck, post some pics when you're done however you go about doing it.
