I love the look of a ball type **** but im not sure if it will fit properly if you guys have done any of these swaps could you fill me in. If it worked out for you and if it fit correct?
Thanks. Tony.

Hey Rick,
I will as soon as I get me one. By any chance do you know where I could get one?
Thanks. Tony.

Re: Swaping Shift *****? Help!
91-92 shift ***** are NOT a direct replacement for the 82-87 style. The earlier style ***** use a C-clip under the button, the later styles use a U-clip that pushes in through the front of the ****.
Because of that, the groove on the shifter is in different locations. If you want to switch to a 91-92 style **** you will need a different shifter. We have them available on our site if you need one. Here's a link if you're interested.

Sorry, all we have in stock right now are the style you already have. Just so you know, you need one from an 83-87 Camaro.
We don't even have any 83-87 Camaros lined up right now so I'm not sure when we may even get one in.

I might have one but would need to check that it fits the ball style. Do you need just the shifter or the **** as well?

I knew about the different clip styles, but the groove always looked to be in the same spot as the earlier years.
If thats the case just get the whole shifter from the same (junkyard)car as the ****.Just make sure its a 4 speed auto & not the 3 speed.

Re: Swaping Shift *****? Help!
Yes, I have a couple, they're both slightly different so I'd have to check. The problem is that adding up what I paid along with shipping it ends up being better if you can find one locally. I'm still curious about what you have and if it can work. I had the square style **** in my '86 and switched it to the round style and then again to a T-handle one with a little modification to the handle. That's kind of why I have them around so I have something to reference off of without tearing the cars apart, lol

Re: Swaping Shift *****? Help!
Ok, I dug around a little. They made the ball with leather and without for the automatics. They also differ in shape as well as the distance top and bottom from where the C-clip attaches. In other words the recess for the button differs in depth as do the length of the buttons. Some have metal tabs on the inside and other don't. I've been grabbing stuff over many years and I never kept track of what came from what years. I have a couple of shifters and I'm not even sure if they're from Firebirds or Camaro's but the slot for the C-clip is about 1/8" from the top of the shaft on both. (Firebirds use the U shaped clip BTW.)

Re: Swaping Shift *****? Help!
IIRC, it's not all that difficult to remove the assembly. But if you pull the handle off of yours, you should be able to compare it to what I posted. If it's similar, then there's a good chance it will fit. Just make sure you include the cut out as well. Pull the U clip out and the handle off and that's it. My '86 that I swapped around had the U clip and the square handled shifter ****.
