Altight heres the deal, I have a 87 Camaro (85 mph cluster i belive) it was originaly the v6 model, someone swapped the engine (305 TPI)/tranny (4Sp Auto) out with Gta ones, the gta tranny has a electronic speedo pick up head thing, and the camaro doesnt have A ELECTRONIC dash, I have a 89 camaro that im parting out, with a cable driven speedo (125 cluster) if I rob that pickup gear thing, and the cluster off of the parts one, and put them in the 87, will it read corectly, I know it will be off a little (15" wheels Vs 16"), but as of right now, I have now speedo

 

If I understand correctly, all you need do is swap the cable-driven speedo sleeve and driven gear (eliminating the electronic VSS) into the trans and swap in the speedo head only. You'll need to also change the drive and/or driven gears in the trans to make the speedo read correctly.

Since your going to take on the task of getting the speedo workin',.... be sure to get all the right parts before taking everything apart.

When it comes to the cluster remove the entire 89 cluster and install it in your 87. That way the tachometer is the correct V8 Tach and will be accurate. ( it will be close at least ! ) A V6 tach is WAY off when connected to a V8 distributor !

You will probably need to replace the speedo gear on the tranny tail-shaft to make the speedo accurate. Your car was a V6 87 Coupe...... That means you probably still ahve the original 3.42 gears in the rear end. For 3.42 gears you will need to use the following speedo gears:

Drive gear ( on tailshaft ) Grey 15 tooth
Driven Gear ( on sensor ) Yellow 41 tooth ( for 245/50/16 or 215/65/15 )

The only other thing you will need to install is the speedo cable. IMO: It's better to get the stuff ready in advance and have it working when your done than to get the speedo working - but with completely inaccurate readings !

 

i couldnt get the electronic speedo gear off my tranny since it is PRESS FITTED on to swap it and get the cable gear on there. and believe me, they are VERY different gears since the electronic speedo uses a magnetic sensor

 

700R4 to 700R4 and T-5 to T-5 electric to cable or cable to electric should be a direct swap. None of the ones I've seen (but I haven't seen them all by any means) are pressed in. The T-5, for example has a retaining clip held in place with a single bolt.

yeah this tranny was a rebuilt one out of a 88 pickup truck. wish i could have gotten a picture.

well it went into a thirdgen and a 700r4 is a 700r4

and im referring to the gear on the tailshaft of the tranny, not the sensor or cable hook up
