RANT: weatherstripping prices
is there anyone else here that has a huge problem with the ridiculous prices of weatherstripping for our thirdgens? $250 for each door, $60 for the trunk, $500 for the t-tops, and then you have the special peices that go across the bottom of the windows, which i'm sure is another few hundred dollars. so you want to re-do the weatherstripping on your car? hmm, that will be $1500. what i don't understand is they are pieces of plastic and rubber that cannot cost very much to make. i can't see any manufacture spending more than 20-30 dollars to make a weatherstripping kit and they turn around and try to make us pay hundreds for it.
what gives?
i've searched many sites and ebay listings and they are all consistantly ridiculous. hawks seems to be average, scroll through some of there stuff...

why is it so expensive?! i could drop in an lsx motor for the amount of money it would cost me to redo the stripping on my car. not to mention the cost to install it. i'd probably go to a dealer or bodyshop just to make sure it was done right, and that'd be even more money.

either pay the money or have a swimming pool for a car. your choice. prices do suck but unless you know how to make your own weatherstripping your screwed like the rest of us. dont complain to much though. the street rodder guys usually have to have their weatherstripping either custom made or get lucky and find somebody that makes some. try doing weatherstripping in a 1939 desoto sedan. that would be rubber for 10 windows and 4 doors including 2 wing windows. plus the trunk. my dad paid 3k for all the rubber on his car. so be happy.

Go to the JY, and find a newer SUV with good soft weather stripping... Take a blow dryer, heat it up, and pull it off. Buy some double sided tape, cut the weather stripping and reuse it. WAY cheaper!

Re: RANT: weatherstripping prices
it sucks that for sure. but if you need new window sweeps then go to a jy and get some off a 4th gen car and trim it to fit. people on here do it and its what i plan on doing when i restore my car. as for ttop leaks, theres a tech article on a cheap TEMPORARY fix. check it out.

Re: RANT: weatherstripping prices
i do have a question though. we have t-tops on a '92 camaro that are from an '86 iroc-z. the t-tops fit fine, but they are extremely loud (wind noise) at highway speed. i've asked this question many times, but can i buy weatherstripping for an '86 iroc-z and put it on my '92 without problems? that way the seals would match perfect and i wouldn't get all that noise?

Re: RANT: weatherstripping prices
not sure on that one. id get weatherstripping that matched my car not the ttops. ttops fit throughout the years, only thing different that im aware of is the size of the pin.

Re: RANT: weatherstripping prices
Sagging door hinge pins could cause alot of road noise/leaks as well...since the door is sagging, the glass won't meet up with the t-top weatherstripping like its supposed to. Just something else to consider.

I got genuine GM weatherstripping from my body shop and they get discounted prices from the dealer. I paid around $400 (i got the invoice at home) for all new seals except the hood to cowl. The shop even installed the t-top seals for me. You get what u pay for so get good seals.

Re: RANT: weatherstripping prices
and lastly, the windows, if you roll the down halfway or at all, shake and rattle around in the doors and it is very very very annoying. what needs to be changed to fix that?

Re: RANT: weatherstripping prices
yout window regulator and motor and all the crap in there is prolly loose. i took an afternoon of my time and took the door pannel off and took zip ties and zip tied everything that would wiggle and tight it up tight. i have 90% less noise now and when i slam my door it doesnt rattle much. plus you have window quides or 'adjusters' and if theyre loose the window will shake back and forth and bounce off of those. they need to be tightened to hold the window solid. and if you tighten those you can adjust it correctly to where your window will meet with the weatherstripping and help the leaking problem. check out te tech articles. theres SO much info in there.
Re: RANT: weatherstripping prices
Also if the door are sagging an have play in them toss a new set of Camaro Door Hinge Pins in them to bring them back into alignment.
