I went to the junkyard last week and found a mint condition console out of a 1988 GTA. When I opened the lid I found a (6) tape dispenser in the console and a little change pocket in the front. I have never seen one of these before so I had to buy the console. Does anyone have any idea what RPO code the tape dispenser is?

 

I'm not sure what the RPO is, but that cassette tape holder is an insert that goes into the console... it's not part of the console itself. It can be removed if you'd like. In fact, I've got a mint one in my pile of parts somewhere, but never found anybody who wanted to buy it.

My 86 T/A came with it from the factory. The cassette holder was gone with the wind, for good reason... Who listens to cassettes? Who wants to sacrifice the entire console for 6 cassettes? Several other GM cars used similar built in holders, and I've yet to see anyone ever use them to hold tapes.

 

My buddy had an 86 TA (nicely optioned, digital dash, TPI, blah blah blah) with the cassette holder, and he did in fact use it to hold tapes. He's the only person I know of that ever used it.

 

Yeah, tapes are pretty much a thing of the past. Although, my dad will still pull our an 8 track every once in a while.
