would it be easier to go for a 4th gen console or would the gta stuff bolt up?
basically are they interchangeable?

The GTA console will fit, but the console was designed for use with a radio pod. The console in your Camaro is very different than the GTA console in many ways. You'd need to either hack up your console to leave the radio portion attached to your dash (which always looks terrible) or you'd have to get a Firebird radio pod and try to make it work.

Well you could do that as well.

Or you could stick with the stock Camaro console, since it matches the rest of the stock interior and doesn't warp and fall apart with age.

 

That would be my advice. That's one thing I love about the 1982 to 1984 Firebirds. They use basically the same console, and I've seen junkyard cars that are in extremely rough condition with excellent center consoles. In contrast there are many otherwise pristine or perfect Firebird/Trans Ams with center consoles that are in very rough shape.
