Re: shift indicator from orange to blue

On my Camaro, it was easy- remove the shifter ****; remove the torx screws holding the plate down; shift the trans to a position so that you can lift the plate up far enough to get at the bulb; grasp the bulb holder(the wires coming out of it should make it obvious) and twist and pull- it is a bayonet mount.

Swap out the bulb, reverse proceedure and drive away all 'blue'!

I didn't even need to take the **** off when I ran my iPod cable and put the indicator bulb back in (It fell out somehow?).

Re: shift indicator from orange to blue

I'm pretty sure you can just put a blue light in and be done. That's what the PO of my firebird did, although they changed the color to red, so it might be different.

Re: shift indicator from orange to blue

hmmmm, well I suppose if you put a blue light in it would look purple, I think. But you said you changed the lights in the instrument cluster without a prob, wouldn't there be the orange/amber tinting on the gauges too?

Re: shift indicator from orange to blue

no the lights were orange because on the light bulbs there were orange "condoms" on them.... so i went to pep boys and got blue "condoms" and changed the color from orange to blue..... looks pretty sweet.... blue dash but i have orange needles.... the two tone looks really good and matches my radio....

Re: shift indicator from orange to blue

There is a 1/16" thick sheet of orange plastic inside the shift indicator. You can't change the color on this (unless you want it red like I did) without replacing it. In order to do this, you have to get the plate out, undo the 2 bolts holding the indicator to the plate, and separate the 2 layers of plastic. I suppose you could try getting some plexi and using a blue light bulb or something. When you reassemble, you can either use white spray paint on one side (scratch up the surface of the plexi to paint and tape the other side), or you can do what I did and sandwich a piece of paper in the middle. I used exterior window plastic tape to put mine back together, but I guess you could use epoxy if done right. Mine hasn't come back apart in 6 years since I did this, though.

Re: shift indicator from orange to blue

I went the super-cheap route and used one of my Testors paint markers... It didn't come out too bad, but it would have been better if I masked off one side and sprayed the other with a coat of Testors Gloss Red...

Camaro guys have it easier as they just change bulb colors and go... They have standard 194 bulbs, and we get the crappy ones they use in the radio and HVAC control head...

:edit: Oh, and don't forget to sand the edges of the indicator before putting it back in the light housing... Glue or whatever you use won't stick to the paint. Forgot also to mention that you have to sand the factory white paint off of the plastic as well.

Re: shift indicator from orange to blue

You can go to a place like Lowes and get a really small piece of plexi for dirt cheap (I got a piece that was around 24x36" for about $20), and make it whatever color you want.
