Custom dash

Has anyone seen any fiberglass dash's that would look good housing a completely custom digital dash? I need something that is 91-92 styled and that I put a custom dash into. I like the old Knight Rider styled dash, but without the stupid tv screens. Looking for ideas and anywhere to look other than VFN or whatever their name was.

Thanks

Re: Custom dash

how dare you call them stupid! :P
You could make it yourself.
I'm in the middle of making mine. I bought a couple of pieces of lightweight aluminium box lengths, about 1"sq. to make it with.
I'm leaving the top dashpad on, so i really just have 1 piece going straight across from side to side and screw the dashpad onto that, and the bottom piece goes from one mounting plate to the other and just has a U shape made up for around the steering column, and 1 short piece either side joining the 2 together. Once you've got the frame you literally just screw all your bits and pieces to the frame using L brackets or whatever you like, and when its all done, just make up a piece of plastic or fibreglass to cover your shame and make it look puurty.
I'm putting an in car pc in mine and 12" touchscreen, along with a new aftermarket air con system, so I had to start from scratch. Now it'll be heaps stronger than the original, lighter, and exactly how i want it to be.
My only problem now is finding a 94-97 cluster to import to australia that i can still use my current mech. speedo cable and other bits.
Whats the point of having a car that can got 140mph with a click of the fingers if you just see the needle hit 90mph after a few secs :P
I'll post pics as soon as its done.

Re: Custom dash

Think I'd want to see pics of that since I can't seem to picture it in my head. I'm looking for something fiberglass that looks like it still came from the factory like such. Obviously it won't look perfectly factory, but I'd like to have it look the part as much as possible.

Re: Custom dash

Yeah, its not the easiest thing to describe, but its very easy to do.
I looked at all the different ways to do it, putting another cars dash into the T/A, building a fibreglass one from scratch, cutting up the factory dash, but it was all very involved, and too many things that could go wrong.
This way you just remove the current dash, clean everything up, install a frame, bolt or screw every thing you want in the dash to that frame, and make, or even get someone to make the face plate to cover your shame.
The face plate is what you'll spend the most time on, if you want to get creative you can glu some circles of wood to it around the gauges and then fibreglass it up to give it some depth, but once you've got the frame in there, you can do whatever you want.
I've done up a crude drawing at work to give you a better idea of what it is.

I bought the aluminium square bar from a local hardware store for $10AUD for a 1400mm length each, and the right angle connectors for $1AUD each.
You just measure it up, slot the connectors in, and you're done.
Bolt the frame to the stock mounts, screw onto the firewall for a bit of extra strength, place the dashpad on top and screw onto the frame, then its a matter of designing your cover plate.
For the under dash panels, you can use the ones you've already got and screw them to the frame.

The only thing I'd suggest is run a wire from your neg. terminal on the battery to the frame and screw a thing piece of metal to it, encase you need some grounds.

Re: Custom dash

Hmm...not sure about that one yet. I don't really want a dash that is flat all the way across the front of it even though that area in front of the passenger has always bothered me. When I make the electronics for it I'll have ground wires that I'll take to the body or other framework. The one piece front is tempting though to make it easier to get to other parts and even wiring.

Re: Custom dash

yep.
But as i said, you can still have some depth to it, there's plenty of ways to go about it.
I'm going to first make the flat cover, then I'll get some rings made out of wood and glue them on around the gauges, about 3/4" thick, and some body putty or something and give it a gradual slope back to flat.
Alternative you can just glue a 3rd gen or 4th gen (depending on your gauges) trim onto it and do it that way.
You don't have to just go flat, but I'm doing that just to start so i have a fully working and unshameful dash, then I'll class it up when i have the time.
Plus i can have the time to get it right and try it out on the car with the removal of a few screws.

Re: Custom dash

At first I was thinking about just taking the instrument panel out and replacing them with the digital replacement, but the more that I think about it the more I think I just want to replace the drivers side with something a little more useful for my purposes. I still like the old KITT car so I'm thinking of using some dash styled between that and our factory design, but still looking like it was originally part of a thirdgen. This might be a tall order for myself, but I'll still give it a try. I think the hardest part will be just drawing it up on how I want it once I figure that out, lol.

Re: Custom dash

Saw this link in another thread and thought it might be right up your alley, except for the prices.. ouch! But atleast you might get some ideas from it.

Yeah, I've already ran across that site with all the searching I've done looking for dashes to use. I think I just about looked at every single KR site there is looking for something that I could use.
