Tach replacement

Can I replace my V8 tachometer with and another V8 tachometer without having to replace the whole gauge cluster?

Re: Tach replacement

First off what's wrong with the one you have now? You may only need to change the board and not the entire tach.

Re: Tach replacement

If the gauge is faulty, you can replace it from the front (no cluster removal). Gauges are pretty much plug and play. Twenty minute job.

Re: Tach replacement

Just recently my tach has been erratic first start up of the day. It either stays at zero or bounces all over the place. Than after about 10 to 15 minutes of driving it catches where it should be and reads right again. Someone told me to try to direct wire past the tach filter to see if thats the problem, but some one cut both wires going from my tach filter. So in short it isn't hooked up anyway. I have owned my camaro for 4 years and this is the first time this has happened. Thanks for the help.

Seems to be a common problem as these cars get older.
Heres my thread on pretty much same subject. On mine I might end up having to replace the cluster to resolve the issue:

82-89 Camaro; Yes... But at least the 85-92 Firebirds the gauge cluster has to come out and screws removed from the back to remove the gauges. I want to say the 90-92 Camaro is the same way. I've never had a 82-84 Firebird cluster apart, so no help there.

Thanks for the clarification. I was addressing the issue with his 84 Camaro.

Re: Tach replacement

Agreed... I just assumed it was an 84 Z-28 as that is what is in his profile.

Except when I replied, that info wasn't in his profile.

Re: Tach replacement

Sorry guys. Yes my car is one of the 100 thousand Z-28 Camaro's built in 1984. Thanks for the help though.
