So how bad are the rattles?
So how bad are the rattles?
I have a 2001 Honda S2000 that I really love, but now that I have a little guy it and would nice to have something I could track AND has a back seat.
So my list includes
1) Used 911 (perferablly the Carrera S)
2) 2011 Mustang (12 sec 1/4 mile family car!)
3) A 91-92 Z28 Project car with an MT, SFC, big brakes, tubular K member, suspension upgrades, dyna-mat and the like.
IN FACT, I was thinking instead of a V8, the Turbo ecotech 4cly from the Solstice/Sky. Similar HP, less wight, better balance.
BUT rattles make me crazy, so how bad are the rattles AFTER you stiffen the car with SFC, strut tower bar, wonder bar and the like?

As much as I love my Camaros they do have various rattles. The car is low to the ground and unless you have subframe connectors, wonderbar and extra sound deadner you will hear some rattles.
But even with the rattles I prefer it to a Mustang. The inside of a Mustang is too small for me.

I agree. I got a new one in my 92 passenger sail panel that tomorrow I will be hunting down. I agree they can be conquered but they do exist. In my 88 a wheel alignment stopped a bunch of rattling.

Re: So how bad are the rattles?
Honestly these cars have tons of rattles. I'm a fellow Honda owner (Acura CL Type S). I agree, the Camaro will drive you crazy. I have most of my rattles tracked down and stopped in the Camaro. However it was a lot of work. How big of a project are you looking to take on? I've spent the last year trying to get my Camaro to drive like my Acura (rattles, steering, suspension, road noise, brakes). The Camaro will hopefully be the Acura on steroids. Its getting there, hopefully I'm close.

Many problems can be attributed to the doors/windows:

Re: So how bad are the rattles?
I agree with James. I know on my '86 Camaro, the door hinges are worn and contributes to it as well.
I know some Thirdgens are better than others, and the deluxe carpeting has a much thicker rubber backing than standard. When I swapped mine I noticed a lot more road noise than before. The doors on my '85 shut solid while the one on my '86 sounds like it's going to fall apart.
Also, many don't notice it because the exhaust or stereo cover up the noise, or many don't want the added weight of the dynomat type material commonly found in modern vehicles. Comparing modern cars to older ones is difficult since seals and such are worn and also the standards were different over the years. I have no doubt though that a Thirdgen could be made a lot quieter by stiffening up the frame, using softer springs, shocks and other suspension components, addressing some of the door and dash issues and adding dynomat and replacing the weatherstripping.
I haven't really been concerned about it that much as my Burly is sometimes also called "The Rattler".
I will be using some of the tips from the thread James started when I get around to it. I have no need to fix anything on the '85.

Re: So how bad are the rattles?
You'll never hear the 3rd gen rattles - the baby rattles, talking toys, screaming, crying, and Barney dvd's will drown out any 3rd gen rattles!
Congrats on the rug rat!
Given the 2000 pounds of strollers, car seats, diaper bags, juice boxes, blankies, portable dvd players, Cheerios, etc. that you'll need to tote ... have any kind of weekend warrior you like, and pick up a cheap used minivan for the baby bussing! Nothing cool about a minivan - but they are the ultimate baby bus!
