Idea: GPS Head Unit
Been pondering a new idea for a little while and decided to search through my favorite boards for someone who may have had the same idea, but to my amazement, no one has... or at least hasn't posted it... yet.
So, the idea is instead of using a standard head unit in our cars, finding a head unit that functions as a gps system as well as an audio unit. I prefer things to look as seamless as possible, so it needs to look like it came with the car from the factory. I work around a lot of newer model cars and most of them have built in gps systems with touch screens and audio units built into them. So that's the basic idea.
Anyone had this idea yet? Anyone inspired as much as I am to do it? It's on my to-do list, but so is a full restoration including a new engine, fuel delivery system, paint, etc... so I won't be posting any pictures of the procedure anytime soon. So, any takers?

Actually it has been discussed many many many times.
There is a car audio section that if you search you'll find the answers you need.
Heres a post i started with the exact same question https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/car-...tereo-fit.html
The answer yes and no. The most common gps navigation systems are a double din wide, while the camaro radio port is 1.5 dins wide. So you'll have to do some cutting, refer to the article or me if you have any questions. I seriously thought about this, but wasnt in love with cutting up my camaro to get it to fit. good luck.

Re: Idea: GPS Head Unit
The problem is that most if not all the nav units that aren't in fold out screens are all double din in size. Our radio pods can only accommodate 1.5 din radios or smaller. Plus they are limited in regard to length. Some units are longer than what our radio pods can handle. This tends to be the reason why after market radios look so bad in our cars. At a bare minimum you'll be looking at modifying the radio pod bezel and inside the pod.
Good luck.
Good luck.

my wife is a total avalanche snob and a gadget freek. she has a 2009 avalanche with just about every gadget gm offers. her only gripe is the built in gps. she likes her garmin better. she doesnt like having to look down at the gps and lose sight of the traffic. i dont care for head unit gps either just from the terror rides with her trying to use the head unit gps.
