Re: Head Light ****

To get the **** out - there is a very small round headed button-looking thing on the bottom of the switch - you can barely see it from up under the dash when the lower dash panels are removed - it has a spring in it, and is silver (or rusted). If you push up on this while pulling and wiggling the ****, the **** will come out. It's a process of wiggling and pushing the **** in/out while pushing up on this little button with varying pressure - don't expect it to just magically come out - it takes some playing and patience.

Then you can remove the dash cover over the switch. I still think removal and replacement of the headlight switch itself will require a bit of cursing and backache while reaching up in there from the underside - but until you get the **** out nothing can be done.

Also note - when you pull the **** out, the headlights will be on - the battery will drain, and the buzzer will drive you insane - the only way to turn the lights off is to reinstall the **** - so disconnect the battery or pull the fuse for the lights first to save your battery and your sanity.

Re: Head Light ****

What holds the switch in place is a cylindrical plastic kinda light purplish nut that threads into the front of the switch. It either came loose or broke. There are slots around the edges of it that you can use to screw it back in if its still there. It 's got a hole down the middle and surrounds the shaft. If broken you have a not difficult but PITA job to replace it

Re: Head Light ****

Should disconnect the battery anytime you're working around electrical anyways ;-) Wouldn't be fun reaching in a confined area with barely any room to move and SHOCK yourself. Likley break something in the dash (and your wrist/arm) while thrashing your arm back down as quickly as possible LOL

the switch from an 80's Impala and caprice works and has a metal nut/threads vs the plastic on the camaro

if you have a local boneyard, then caprices and impalas should be on your search

Okay if you pulled off the cover I assume you got the **** off. When you look where the shaft goes, it disappears into a round plastic gray thing. That's the nut. Around the shaft you can see radial lines in the plastic part. Stick a flat blade screwdriver or something in the slots and try to screw it clockwise to tighten. If either it's not there or that doesn't help, you have to get the switch out and remove whatever is left of it before putting in a new one. Sometimes they break from old age and leave the threaded part in there but lose the front part that holds in the switch. That help?

You can also get a brass one from the pluming section at your local hardware store.

Re: Head Light ****

What in the world would a nut shaped like that do in a plumbing application?

Re: Head Light ****

I just happened to pull one at a yard last weekend, seems this is a common thing to break. A long time ago someone posted about there being a aftermarket one made from stainless or aluminum but never looked into it.

the nut isn't the issue. It's the plastic threads that it screws onto which break. That's why I picked from a Caprice vs another Camaro; it's made of metal, not plastic
