1989 Firebird steering column compatibility

I know 89 was an odd year because it was basically the only year with VATS standard and no air bag. However, is there an actual difference in the columns that doesn't allow you to swap your VATS ignition and wiring into a older column? It seems to me GM would of used the same column and figures out how to make the VATS fit rather then go with basically a one-off design.

All my searches turn up a 89 is different because it has VATS, but there is nothing else listed as different and they always recommend grabbing the VATS box, too (meaning they don't expect you to swap the ignition).

You can replace it with any '82-'92 column the only difference I see is the wires running through it . If you get an early column then just run the ignition lock vats wire through it to the connector under the dash and your done . if you get a '90-'92 column pull all the air bag wiring out and your good to go .
