Z28 Dash Badge on an IROC-Z?
Hey everyone this is my first post, glad to be a part of this informative community!
I bought a 1987 IROC-Z28 Camaro recently and have been wondering about a Z28 dash emblem I found in the center console. The emblem on the dash says Z28 IROC-Z. I checked the VIN number and it confirms the car came with a TPI 350 which was only available in the IROC for '87. I also checked the label on the door which tells me to put 16" tires on the car and the RPO code sheet in the center console has the code B4Z and the serial number on the code sheet match the serial number on the car.
Were there ever IROC-Z's with Z28 dash emblems?

Thanks for the fast response! I'm almost certain the badge is from the dash since I have those same Z28 emblems as yours on the ground effects and back bumper and it doesn't look anything like it. It's the same size as the Z28 IROC-Z badge on the dash and the same red and orange color only it doesn't have the "IROC-Z" underneath.

Re: Z28 Dash Badge on an IROC-Z?
It does look alot like one of the dash emblems. There is a real good chance that that emblem is from a dash. Maybe at one point the PO (previous owner) replaced the entire dash (maybe because of cracking in the base or maybe some sort of other reason, possibly a fire though I doubt it). So, he pulled the Iroc logo off his origional dash and pulled off the Z-28 logo to put the Iroc one in its place.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I could have sworn that certain years, body styles, and colors got the orange logos on the rockers and bumpers.
But then again I am not sure if I am correct on that last statement.

Re: Z28 Dash Badge on an IROC-Z?
On my 87 Iroc Z28.......the dash emblem says Z28 and under the 28 in smaller letters says Iroc--Z
Also I want to point out something that I have read on other threads....
If your car has Iroc on the front part of the door nearest to the front fender, then your car has a 305.
If your door has it closer to the back and near the quarter panel then your car has a 350
To confirm this look at the 8th digit in the VIN.
If its an 8 then you have a 350
And this part should be known with out saying, but I'll say it for the new guy...the 3rd gen cars are old and unless you know the person who drove it off the lot new. You will never know the true story behind your car.. Any thing on your car could have be changed out at any given time.
Have fun with your Iroc. Z28 ..........I am

Re: Z28 Dash Badge on an IROC-Z?
All '85-'87 IROCs have it on the front part of the door, all '88-'90 cars have it on the back, regardless of whether the car is a 305 or a 350 ('87+, since of course the 350 wasn't an option until '87).

Re: Z28 Dash Badge on an IROC-Z?
Looks like the rocker emblems on my 85 IROC.
FYI: The IROC wasn't a separate model, 85-87, but an option (B4Z) available with Z28. IIRC, in 88 that changed so that the IROC was a model unto itself. The rocker emblems were then IROC-Z.

Thanks for clearing that up James. I knew I had seen some Camaros on this site with the orange rocker decals.

Re: Z28 Dash Badge on an IROC-Z?
Thanks everyone for the help, I'm certain I have an IROC-Z from looking at the RPO codes and finding the B4Z option code but I was just wondering if maybe for 1987 before the IROC was it's own model, the Z28's with the IROC option still had the Z28 dash emblem. The badge I found couldn't have come from the ground effects because on my car it has the silver Z28 badge which is larger than the orange and red badge. See in this picture the silver emblem looks bigger.

Re: Z28 Dash Badge on an IROC-Z?
I am pretty certain you have an Iroc too. There is one thing I am having trouble with and that is comparing a zoomed in shot of the badge and a shot of your car from a distance to see if they are similar sizes. Do you have a pic of a side by side comparison? If you are comparing the badge that is off your car to the one on the rockers then the other one is probably bigger. I think the badge on the back bumper is a little bit larger than the ones on the sides. I also have the silver badges but that doesnt mean the badge isnt off another car though. Did the guy ever tell you about him repainting it? That could mean he had hit a bump and cracked his rocker in half therefore making him replace it with one from another Iroc that may have had different styled decals. But like earlier mentioned it is always a what if on what happened. You could always carfax it but something like that wouldnt be on there most likely because people dont always put full coverage on these cars because of the age or condition of there car. So he may have secretly snuck to the junk yard and got a new part and repainted it without anyone knowing.

Sorry here are the two emblems side by side. The dash emblem on the car now is the one that says z28 with iroc-z in small letters beneath it but the emblem looks really new and not at all like it could be 24 years old which made me feel like the z28 one I found in the console came from there since it looks considerably older.

Re: Z28 Dash Badge on an IROC-Z?
I am betting the PO at one point had ordered a new logo for the dash which is why yours looks so new. Mine is origional but it still looks new too, so it sounds like he just really took care of his car kind of like me. As for that extra you found in the center console I am still scratching my head on that one. Like I said before maybe he changed out the dash board (maybe a glove box mod gone wrong or an electrical fire) but I dont know. So you have an extra dash logo now. You could keep it so that you can sell it to people restoring their cars in the future or just keep it and make a key chain out of it. Personally I think it would make a pretty cool key chain!
An unrelated topic but are you good at photoshopping? Your sig looks photoshopped and I was looking to do something sort of like that. If you are good at it can you check out my thread in the photoshop and sig part of this forum and sort of make one for me? That would be great.

Re: Z28 Dash Badge on an IROC-Z?
Can you do two? I am indecisive in which one I like better.

Also instead of putting my screen name could you put the part about it being an 87 Iroc-Z and that it has a 5.7 350 for its power plant? If so that would be cool.
Kind of like:
1987 Iroc-Z
5.7 350 V8
And sort of stagger it?
Thanks man I am not good at doing any stuff like that.

Re: Z28 Dash Badge on an IROC-Z?

Sorry not trying to jump your thread....About the iroc on the door that was something I found on hear in 2009 when I first got this car. I too was trying to find out what I had.. so what you are saying I might have 88 or newer doors on my iroc.... It wouldn't surprise me, the PO put a 4 in cowl hood a notch back with a 90's high rise wing and the ZR-1 tail lights on it....Thanks for the correction

No problem man glad you like em. If you know anyone else that wants some done send em to this thread and thanks again for your help with trying to figure out where that emblem came from. I do know the guy redid the dash but maybe he was just starting an emblem collection like 1BADZ28SD lol

Re: Z28 Dash Badge on an IROC-Z?
Wait you knew he redid the dash from the beginning??? WHY DIDNT YOU SAY ANYTHING WHEN I SAID IT MIGHT BE FROM THE DASH???? Just kidding, atleast we know that is the most likely thing that happened. I will make sure to steer anyone this way if they need help with a sig. You can also go to the photoshop and sig section on the forum if you like to do it so much. There are a couple of people looking for help on there.
it was only the top part of the dash where I guess it was cracking a little or something but see even if he redid the dash and pulled the old emblem off, shouldn't the old emblem have been a Z28 IROC-Z emblem instead of just Z28?. I'm pretty convinced that this had to be from another car or something because my car is without a doubt an IROC-Z. Re: Z28 Dash Badge on an IROC-Z?
There are too many people jumping to way too many conclusions here!! This is how bad information gets out. The OP asked about the extra badge and people start questioning his car being an IROC-Z, commenting on door decal placement and saying the car was repainted or the dash replaced! Then someone else states their decals are in the wrong place and people state the doors were replaced!!! Are you kidding me? The doors were replaced because the decals are in the wrong place?
Here's the deal guys. The emblem is not a rear bumper emblem with the bowtie cut off, it's not because the original dash assembly was replaced, etc. It's a dash emblem from a Z28, not an IROC-Z. How or why it's in the center console is irrelevant. To the person with the 87 IROC-Z with the decals at the back of the door, the decals were put there by a previous owner. End of story. It doesn't mean the car was repainted or the doors were swapped. It could be as simple as someone just liking the rear placement better.

Re: Z28 Dash Badge on an IROC-Z?
It's most likely a replacement badge, but it is technically still correct. All the IROC-Z cars are technically Z28's with graphics packages and upgraded suspension / wheels. It's a package on the Z28, and even after being sold as a separate model is still an upgraded Z28...hence the "Z" designation. It's also why all cars with the same package built as of 12:01am Jan 1st 1990 were Z28 and not IROC-Z, the license to use the name ran out at midnight Dec 31st 1989.

Re: Z28 Dash Badge on an IROC-Z?

You should and do have the Z28 IROC-Z emblem in the dash which is correct.
As for the extra Z28 emblem in the console, probably something that someone bought or a weekend in Mexico.

You IROC-Z also came with special suspension, stowaway spare tire, P245/50VR16 blackwall tires, aluminum wheels and halogen fog lamps.

Re: Z28 Dash Badge on an IROC-Z?
There are two small plastic "push-in" pins on the back of a hard plastic dash badge, and its much smaller than a rocker/rear emblem. Any rocker/rear badges (that I've seen) are soft and flexible and have peal-off paper covering a adhesive backing.
