Interior Paint
Has anyone on TGO ever painted your interior plastics?I would like to know how it came out,is it difficult, does it match up and things I should lookout for.Thank You.
Re: Interior Paint
People have done it, but it rarely looks good.
Source the color you want, it shouldn't be too hard to find used in any color (except maybe brown or blue) at the rate people part the cars.

Re: Interior Paint
That's what I'm afraid of,painting the parts and it looks like crap, then being forced to buy the parts anyway.

Here's a thread addressing the same issue:

Sounds like it can be done with decent results. I hope so, at least, I plan on doing the same.

Re: Interior Paint
All plastic on the doors and the trim around the bottom painted. Also painted the entire sail panels but you can`t them in this picture. Wash with dish detergent and hot water, and us adhesion promoter. 5 years, and still looks like new. :-) PPG color matched, BTW.

Re: Interior Paint
Thanks! I used PPG interior dye/paint. I got it locally at a place called BAPS, but I would think any jobber could hook you up. If not, let me know and I can put you in touch with BAPS. They were able to get the exact color on the Firehawk you see above and my `86 that has Carmine Red. I would never hesitate to dye any of the panels....they look like new afterwards! In fact, I am actually dyeing the parts on my `86 that are already in really nice shape because I want them to look perfect. It also is very durable. I did my Firehawk about 5 years ago, and it still looks like new. I can also try my hardest to scratch it with my fingernail, but can never get it to scratch or chip off.
If you guys want, I can write up my technique if you think it would be worthwhile.

Re: Interior Paint
Here are some pics of what I am using. All I know is it`s PPG, and there is a bunch of confusing information on the label that probably only a paint supplier would understand:

Re: Interior Paint
Maybe I will put together a tutorial with some pictures. I actually just started cleaning up the passenger sail panel, but have "before" pictures and will hopefully have after pictures this weekend or early next week. For those of you with carpeted panels, hot water mixed with liberal amounts of dish detergent and a light scrub does wonders on the carpet.

Re: Interior Paint
Nah, I had to go through a book and ask them to mix it. It was an `85 color from memory. I would imagine you could take the colors and numbers from the cans I took pictures of above, give it to the paint supplier, and they could probably figure it out. It was expensive...$95 for 3 cans! But well worth it IMO.

Thanks Manta! Do you want me to just put you in touch with BAPS? I am sure they could figure out some kind of shipping.

Re: Interior Paint
Thanks! In my Firehawk pics above, the semi-gloss black door plastics were actually gray, and I think they turned out pretty good. I would think you would be ok. I would think you would only have trouble going from red to a lighter color, which has the tendency to bleed and turn light colors pink.

My '87 also has Carmine interior, I'm using SEM Portola Red to paint my plastics. It's not exactly the same, but it's the closest thing I could find.

Re: Interior Paint
if you look on your tag in your center console box you will find your interior color code just give them that code and they'll have no problem mixing up your exact color

Re: Interior Paint
Great. Good to hear they could hook you up. I am very happy with it, and hopefully you will be too.
So far, I did the passenger sail panel, the rear panel under the hatch, the two plastic pieces just below the sail panel the cover the rear seat belts, and one of the sill plates, and it feels like I still have about 1/2 to 1/3 of the first can left. I am thinking the 3 cans should do all of my plastic without too much trouble. Did they remember me when you talked to them? They had some trouble finding my color code when I was in, and the guy seemed a little shocked at the cost.

Re: Interior Paint
Do you think I should just buy two cans or just go with the three and have some extra just in case this goes by the wayside, like everything else they stop making for these 3rd gen. cars.

Re: Interior Paint
I would definitely go for three....I am thinking I might be just short with only two. Plus, I agree with you, would be nice to have some extra for future repairs.

Sure go with it,do know how many TGO members are having trouble finding anything in carmine,I'm glad that we can get an original GM color and don't have to look all over the place to replace parts because they don't have the right color.
