Can I get the steering wheel off without a puller?

Hey guys, a friend of mine is parting out his 85 Iroc, and I have an 82 z28. My steering wheel is old and worn out but his is like mint, and I was going to take it. My question is, can you get the wheel off without a steering wheel puller?

What I mean to say is, do the little torx screws on the wheel under the horn button make the wheel come off? or is the only way to get it off by pulling the center nut? Reason I ask is I see them for sale all the time without the center part that attaches to the column.

Thanks for any help guys!

No way around removing the center nut & a puller, unless the torx screws hold it to a hub adapter, like aftermarket steering wheels, but then both cars/steering wheels would have to be using hub adapters.

Sometimes you´re lucky (WD40 helps however) and you can pull and wiggle it free after releasing the center nut.

I was not that lucky. No amount of wiggling and WD40 would let me pull the wheel off without a puller.

If you happen to have a stable piece of metal, some bolts, a nut and a drill at hand, you can rig up a puller yourself.

If you remove the torx screws the wheel will come off. The torx screws hold the wheel to the hub. If you want to get the hub with it, you'll need to rent a puller. But for that style wheel, the hubs should interchange.

I have used a Rubber Mallet in the past to Remove Steering Wheels, But a Steering Wheel puller is nice (Have one now)

Puller is cheap. You may think it's a waste for one time use, but if you buy a balancer puller it will also work on steering wheels.

I would not go banging, prying, yanking,or shaking on a steering column. Buy or rent a puller.

$21 and change to rent or buy a wheel puller. Good investment!
