Dash pad caps, anyone have installed pics?

need to replace or cap the dash pad. I know the concept is to place the cap over the existing pad, however i wanted to see installed pics.. and how it installs...

anyone know how thick they are? any interference with the A pillars? just looking for more info and better pictures, to me adding a cap is adding height and making it tight against the windshield and A pillars...

Re: Dash pad caps, anyone have installed pics?

I'm interested in pics also, as I wonder how far it covers the front edge, and whether or not you can see the "thickness" of it for lack of a better word after it's installed.

Re: Dash pad caps, anyone have installed pics?

I too am very curious about this.. What about owners with the Daylight sensor on the passenger side (like me )..

I'd like to hear reviews of those who PERSONAL own/owned these Dash CAPS.. There is not alot of space on top of the dash.. can't imagine being able to put on something on top..

Since the Daylight Sensor was an export thing added, no USA 3rd gen ever has DRLs, then no....There is no hole for your sensor in the aftermarket caps. You would need to drill a hole for it to see or relocate the sensor so that it could see.

Re: Dash pad caps, anyone have installed pics?

I've seen one installed and it was VERY impressive. the dash had a pin hole grid above the speaker. I'd rather have that than just flat plastic. isn't that how most of them are? no holes for the speaker?

the ones we offer have the perforated speaker holes like you mention since trying to mold the waffle-looking grilles we have on the stock covers would not come out too well.

one recommendation - make sure you use a windshield cover if you park in hot areas; since the caps are thin, excessive heat can cause them to warp. its far and few between that we hear of issues, but it is something we've been warned about

Re: Dash pad caps, anyone have installed pics?

I would like to see more pics of it. While the pic in that link is NOT BAD, it's not exactly a close up as to how much can be seen as far as edge lines.. Also doesn't seem like A1 would ship to Canada.

Re: Dash pad caps, anyone have installed pics?

ok, i got to look at another one of these up close yesterday, and here's my observations

first of all, I'm not sure of the metality of putting a Faux leather grain on a dash pad when the original was a rough texture. if I had one of these, the first thing I would have to do is spray it with aerosol bed liner to give it a different texture and sheen. it just looks out of place

the corners looked great.. loved it

the one I was looking at was warping around the defroster vents. the guy who owned the car said he should have used more adhesive in the area... i'm not sure if it would have helped or not

Re: Dash pad caps, anyone have installed pics?

YIKES!! Is THAT what it looks like? Personally I don't like it at all. I would think they would use the same texture as the original and not Elephant skin looking

Looks WAY too fake. Could spot that a mile away. But I guess if that is all there is for those with severely cracked dash pads.. Guess it's better than nothing..

Re: Dash pad caps, anyone have installed pics?

maybe by posting things like this and getting the reaction of the third gen community, we can get changes made on future runs

I always wondered why websites never showed good pictures of the caps... i think we know the reason now

I too always wondered that. Always seems to either have NO pic.. or more likely than not, would be what appeared to be a DARK XEROX copy of a copy from a magazine or printed image.

........and this is why I bang my head against the wall. For every "fill in the descriptor of your choice" who wants to low-ball on price, this is what we get.

If you have a special mod in mind, rock on, but otherwise...........

Go original or go home.

Seriously? Your knocking people for wanting their cars to look factory fresh, and not put something on their car that looks horribly out of place?

Is that REALLY what you are saying?

sorry guys, its a representative (sample) photo; definitely not an fbody as we all can tell. my TA's stock dash is long gone (4th gen dash is 80% done), so I don't have anything to show for the birds. maybe we can get mike to toss one on the IROC to give you a better idea

This one looks good, and is a decent price... shipping kills it at $62 for me, but still much better than that leather:

If you install the dash cap, are you able to get to the screws if you need to take the dash off to replace the speakers. I don't see any holes in the defroster vents on the new cap.

Re: Dash pad caps, anyone have installed pics?

I have one of these dash caps on my car, and I can say it looks like complete ****. I'm going to be replacing it with one of the reproduction pads that hawks has available now as soon as I can get one ordered. Just got all my money right now tied up in a engine swap.

I'll try to get some pics of it when I can but it will probably be tomorrow or Friday before I'm able to.

Anyone thinking about it, I strongly urge you to reconsider. You might as well take the 120 dollars they cost and burn it and save yourself the trouble of installing this ugly thing.

Just to explain some of the problems with it. They are an alright fit over the entire pad, but the defrost area is absolutely horrible for one thing. The way it's curved and such there is completely wrong. Causing the plastic to be to far away from the actual pad, so when you screw it down the screws will pull in part of the plastic but not other pars. Also the screw holes are off, and the plastic part there is to tall. So if you are like me and put ample glue around the opening areas, it will cause the plastic to kind of bubble up and create a bump there.

Then on the edges, the front corners of all places do not go all the way down and under the original pad. So you have a nice line showing there and can clearly tell that it's a cap on the pad.

Finally (and this is a small gripe) the speaker grills, while I understand the problems with trying to get them to form fit into the original speaker grills, just look bad imo.

Again, don't waste your time or money on this product unless you absolutely can't stand seeing cracks in your current dash pad and can't afford a reproduction one.

Re: Dash pad caps, anyone have installed pics?

Most of the ones on eBay that you see are the dash caps, not complete dashes. The only few that are on there are reproduction ones or cracked ones. People who are selling a decent dash know what they have and won't ask for as little as a hundred bucks. There has to be something wrong with it.

found an ebay seller, selling dash caps with the same "cell grain" that look like our original dash pads.. and he sells them for $123 with free shipping. Its the best one ive seen so far.

Does it have speaker holes..? I can't tell. And I wonder if it will definitely fit a 90-92 model...

I think the speaker grilles look less appealing on the firebird dashes, thus the lower price.

well they also aren't interchangeable with the camaro pads, and more people restore camaros.

heck , the availability of firebird pads is making me consider a getting a firebird, just because I can get a PAD
