Wobbleing stearing wheel

Well i bought a 86 T/A and when i bought it thew steering wheal wobbles a lot, when i turn the steering wheel the wheels do turn but when i grab it and shake it it moves a lot. my dad says that it might be a bearing in the collum thats is shot, but i cant really find anything altho i think its because im not looking in the right thing. i believe that its a tilt collum if that helps, and if anybody thinks it its repairable, or am i up creek and need to buy a new collum.
Thanks in advance

Re: Wobbleing stearing wheel

Sounds like the bolts that hold the upper halve of the column on are loose. It is a very common problem with the Saginaw column. In order to repair it you will need a few special tools that aren't very expensive. You will need steering wheel puller, lock ring depresser, pivot pin puller and internal and external torx bits. You can get away with out some of the tools like the wheel puller and pin puller. The repair is not very difficult but time consuming and difficult to explain. Mike

ok sweet, i actually would only need to get 2 of those tools, since i have the others. but will there be anything i should look for in the way of damage or anything? if i find an exploded view or something in my chilton manual will that help?

Re: Wobbleing stearing wheel

Are you sure the tire(s) aren't messed up? An air pocket in the rubber will make the wheel shake while driving.

Re: Wobbleing stearing wheel

well ive never driven the car(long story short it was doner car that turned out to become the project) but when i grab the wheel i can shake it all around. i think i would be a little to scared to drive it like this. altho i know ill need to so some suspension work but thats for another time. i might not be explaining it right but when i sit in the seat i can turn it and the wheels will turn normally, just if i just shake it the steering wheel will shake. not i did notice that the lock on the column looks busted out which may also have something to do with it. im sorry i didnt mention it earlier, ive only had this car for about a week(it was one hell of a deal, 300 for a TA that just needed a tranny, engine and a passenger side window)

Re: Wobbleing stearing wheel

Read thru the link I posted? The four bolts that attach your column to the tilt mechanism are loose.

You can rent the puller and lock plate remover from AZ.
