Started head liner and sail panels

Pulled out the headliner and sail panels today. Headliner was completely shot. It had water damage from the window seals leaking. I did get to recover the sail panels and they look great, and even got the girlfriend to help. I am going to post some pics of the panels tomorrow.

Re: Started head liner and sail panels

Here are some pictures of the sail panels and the roof with out the headliner. Think I may put some Dynamat or something while I have it out. Headliner fell apart when I took it out. The sail panels are black, but look grey in the picture. Wish I hadn't ordered a grille for the car from year one. Would have gotten a headliner board instead.

Re: Started head liner and sail panels

my sail panels were coming apart, i just swapped them with the 91/92 plastic sail panels. looks fine. direct swap, and dont have to worry as much about the deteriorating fiber board. id like to find a sturdy as hell ttop headliner tho, not about to use a stock used one regardless of its condition - its too frail.

Youngsfbody has the hard top one for 95.00 plus 50.00 for shipping, that's the one I'm going to get. But I have to wait a few weeks.

Re: Started head liner and sail panels

Go ahead and spray some rust converter on that surface rust while you're at it. I had rust in the same exact place.

I got the hardtop headliner kit from Hawks, and I'll admit, my overhead console seems to support it quite a bit. Not sure how well it would work without it.

Try 1Aauto.com
Just got an ABS headliner (for 1989 IROC w/t-tops) for $150, free shipping. It's a little more if you want it covered. I'm going to buy the fabric separately and cover it myself.

How long did it take for you to get it?

Re: Started head liner and sail panels

It took maybe two weeks to get it. Faster than I expected. I had to increase the cutout for the dome light but otherwise it fit nicely. I decided for now just to install it without the fabric and I like it so I might just leave it.

I'll post a picture as soon as I can figure out how.

wonder how compromised the structure would be after cutting areas for the overhead console...

The overhead console will help hold up the headliner. It screws to the roof. When I added one to my TA the holes were there, so no drilling stright bolt in. Just have to connect the wiring for the overhead light.

i dont see any holes for the Overhead Console. only the standard dome light.

"All truck and car headliners ship UPS Oversize 1. This product is rolled up in to a box for shipping and must be laid out as soon as you receive it. Please allow 24-48 hours for the headliner to retake its shape before installing."

wtf? - so, would this thing even be able to withstand cutting into or will it shrivel up?

that being said, is there even a company that makes a ttop headliner that includes the overhead console connections pre cut?

Re: Started head liner and sail panels

There are two screws with no threads close to the screw head, they screw into roof metal. The console slides onto the unthreaded part (in front) and screws on the back of console under the light cover. The front can be a pain to slide in. It must go on first. It took me a while to get them to slide on. You have to push up on console and slide it forward. Look at the top of console you will see the slots.

Re: Started head liner and sail panels

i must be blind, im completely missing what youre pointing out..

there would need to be 3 sections (openings)
in order for it to fit correctly seeing as how its shaped like this:
_|__|__|_
vertical lines being connection points. back part being the actual screws that go thru the dome light section.
per the photo of the headliner it appears there is Only the area for the dome
light...

It comes loosely rolled in a fairly large box and doesn't take more than a few hours to flatten. It's sturdy enough. To enlarge the dome light hole I drilled small holes side by side along the outline I wanted. Then snipped as much as I could. To finish I used a dremmel tool. You just have to be careful not to let the tool slip and I used a block of wood under the drill and a small bit so the bit didn't grab. You can't tell I did the cutting. If you had to cut an area for a console, I'd cut it just so the edges of the cutout would slip under the edge of the console (just like the dome light). That actually holds it up quite nicely.

That does look good. I think I'm going to order the headliner next Friday. I wish Yearone had them a little cheaper I would just go down and pick one up. I might get one from there just so I can get it in next weekend.

Local Auto Reupholstery shop could do a factory look for less money, effort and time. Those online headlener kits are not + the shipping sharges cheap. I bet no one checked the cost at a local shop.

All they will do is order a new one. That's what all the shops around here do. At least that's what they said when I asked about it in my old Camaro.

My shop told me that I would need to go to a junkyard and find one to recover. I'm pretty sure he doesn't know how shitty the original headliners were in the 3rd gens. I'm going to order an ABS one from Hawks in a few weeks and just have him install it.

I bought one for $75 off a guy who had an extra he bought on ebay. This thing was a pain to install.....lots of bowing. I think I'm going to try and slide the whole headliner back an inch to fit a little better!! PS...did I install my dome light the wrong way??

I picked up these black sail panels off ebay several years ago. They have a raised pontiac symbol in them. Kind of hard to tell from pic.
