Aftermarket Headliner install question

The headliner in my car was destroyed, so I purchased an ABS plastic aftermarket one. Getting ready to install and I have a question.

The shoulder belt is mounted on ceiling and comes through the headliner. If you look at the headliner, there is a spot that was removed from the plastic where the seat belt sits. There is also a cut in the plastic that goes from this cut out to the edge of the headliner. I assume that I'm supposed to cut the fabric in this area and then slide the seat belt into place, right? Seems the only way to get it into place, but when done I'm going to have a slit in the headliner and I really don't see anyway to fix it. Am I missing something?

Re: Aftermarket Headliner install question

there should be a plastic part that slides up into place to cover that slit. thats how the factory ones install as well.

Huh. Okay. Not sure I have that...changed the interior color of my car, so I bought some used seat belts. I will have to see if they are pieces are there, or on my old ones. Thanks.

it should be on the seatbelt...it will slide up into place and clip into the seatbelt assembly.

Re: Aftermarket Headliner install question

The seatbelts I purchased do not have these pieces; the original driver side one doesn't either, but the passenger does.

I have found numerous pieces for sale on ebay, but how do I get them on after? I assume that I'll have to carefully cut them, slide them over the belt and then glue them back together or something?

I've been wondering this same thing. I recently had to change my headliner again, and well 26 year old plastic is brittle and I broke the last two tabs off my passenger side one. So I'm going to have to replace it but don't see anyway to get a new one on the seatbelt without unstitching the belt, which is not something I'm willing to do.

To get my old one off I used a dremel with a thin cut blade, and I suppose if I bought new ones to put on I could put them on the same way and it wouldn't look horrible. But I'm curious to the proper way to do it.

Re: Aftermarket Headliner install question

There are after market pieces that have a slit made into them.
I dont recall the colors available or where Isaw them..

I do recall they are around $35-$40 EACH!!!

Try Thirdgenranch, Hawks, 1AAuto, Classic industries, or ebay.

You can cut your own slit, but you have to be careful you don't break the mounting tabs.

Re: Aftermarket Headliner install question

I bought a pair of black ones off of ebay, they were like $30 total. No slits. I'm going to practice on the one that's still mounted on my old seat belt first to see what the best way to cut it is. I'm guessing band saw but I don't know for sure.
