ACC carpet install with insulation, 89 IROC
Back in November I finally had the spare time to knock out some interior resto on my 1989 IROC. I pulled the old, nasty carpet out and installed a brand new front and rear set in Dove Grey.
The carpet looks great, its from ACC carpets. Ordered the set from Ecklers camaro in GA. The insulation is from JC Whitney, appears to be some good stuff. It takes a little more labor to install since you have to use spray adhesive and cut it to fit but I didn't mind one bit...
So, here's the new front carpet laid out in the floor....

I also installed a new dash pad cover that I purchased from Ecklers as well, all in all I'm very impressed with it. Makes the dash look brand new and was an easy install as well.
Here's a few pics to show the old carpet, insulation and new carpet installed. Took me about 8 hours from start to finish.

And a couple more... all I have left to do is recover the seats and install my new headliner. I am having a hard time locating the factory grey seat covers though. Anyone know where I can get a set? Seems Classic Industries and Ecklers just carry the two tone style.

Re: ACC carpet install with insulation, 89 IROC
The only complaint I have about this carpet, which may be because I missed a step during the install, is behind the console on the transmission hump are a couple of places where the carpet is loose and bunched up.
Is there a way to get that out? I let the carpet sit in the floor for two days with the heat cranked in my basement but it still had a couple wrinkles that I couldn't get out. It's really hard to notice but I know its there.
And here is another of the dash pad overlay. Well worth the $100.00

That looks really nice! Can't wait to do mine. Maybe the wrinkle will "work" itself out?

Re: ACC carpet install with insulation, 89 IROC
I sure hope so, maybe the heat during the summer will help it settle down a little. It really doesn't look bad though. No one notices except for me.. lol. Thanks! It's going to get painted on the 20th, just waiting on my t-top weatherstripping to get in from Ecklers. Trying to get the car done before the F-body gathering in Atlanta in May...

That carpet sure looks good. I'm installing dove gray in my blue '86 Z right now. I got the rear well carpet in last night. I found a pair of work gloves under the old carpet. I also installed new heat/insulation shield to help quiet the cockpit down. The rear well carpet went in pretty good. I have a fold line that needs to flatten out but it looks real nice. My carpet was no where near as used up as yours but I didn't realize how aweful mine looked until I placed the new next to the old. I didn't remove the sail panels like you did, I just shoved some new insulation in behind to help quiet down any squeaks.

I installed an ACC carpet in my car in the medium gray color. Beware, within one year the sun turned the carpet from gray to green. I contacted ACC and never got a response from them on this. I lended up buying spray die and recoloring the carpet back to gray.

Here's what the heat/insulation shield looks like.
And this is the new rear well area carpet install in dove gray.

My original carpet was a mess, got tired of looking at it so I was happy to install the new set. I could've gotten away with not removing the sail panels but I also ran Amp wiring and heavier speaker wires for my new stereo system. Just made things easier.

im not sure if my carpet is from acc, but i too have bunching, yours seems to fit better than mine, nothing is a perfect factory remake, either way the carpets still look 1 million % better than the torn up, stained and faded old ones.

I got the same in black for my vert, I have had it laid out in my wifes craft room until I am ready to put in. That hatch area came out great, really nice work.

Re: ACC carpet install with insulation, 89 IROC
I put the carpet in like 8 years ago. The fit was great but the color didn't last. I contacted them a few times and never got a response. I guess they got my money and could care less. I did purchase floor mats made by them around the same time and never had an issue. Hopefully they did resolve the issue. Good luck with the install.

Re: ACC carpet install with insulation, 89 IROC
Thanks for the posi comments. I got the front in last night and I have an area or two that is bunching up, too. The rear passenger side has a crumple I'm trying to work out. I got rid of most of it by adding some poly foam to the hump. It seems like there is too much carpet at the hump so adding in some extra stuffing fills it out a little. I installed the center console to make sure the carpet stays where I want it before I cut the holes for the seat belts or the seats. I'm thinking that I can get some more of that crumple out of the hump area by making sure the carpet is pulled tight and then held down by the rear seat belt bolts.
With the additional heat and sound insulation under the carpet, the rear seat doesn't latch like it should. I think when that gets crushed a little that problem will go away. Although with the added insulation the entire interior feels softer for obvious reasons.
The other thing I did to try to smooth out the crumples was use an iron on the highest steam setting and I ironed the carpets. I talked to a couple of carpet dealers I know and they said using steam helps get carpet to set in. I think heating up the carpet helped get it around the contoured areas like the passenger side hump and the rear foot wells. When I get it all done I'll post some new pics.

ACC did resolve the issue with the carpet dye fading. They stated that they replaced many carpet sets because of this. It was a bad lot of dye that didn't hold up well with UV. You should contact them again and see if you can locate the last emails that were never responded to. They might hook you up again.

Looks great...nothing like fresh carpet! Might get around to doing mine oneday. It's still holding up okay for now.
