need help removing cluster panel on 91 firebird

so after spending an hour searching on this site and going out to the garage trying to figure out. Im trying to remove my cluster panel to replace some gauge lights that are burned out and im trying to remove my srs air bag light because i have an aftermarket steering wheel in my firebird. I have some pics of my interior.it seems easy on the pre 90s cars but i can't figure out how to do it on my 91. I need to know step by step where do i start unbolting. any help would be great. thanks.

Not positive, Mine all apart for the cage, but there are screw that go in towards the dash pad, you may have to pull the dash pad to get to them, then you have to take off the pastic thats down by your knees so that you can access the screws for the bottom of the bezel. Once the bexel is off you can pull the cluster out after like 4-6 obvious screws.

Re: need help removing cluster panel on 91 firebird

The big knee blocker pad under the wheel coes off first. There are recessed bolts under the plastic plugs. They are torx or Allen bolts iirc.
The dash pad then comes off, then you can remove the gauge surround and gauges.

If you look right above the steering column on the bottom of the dash pad, you will notice that some of the screws are for the dash pad. The other screws are for the cluster bezel.

If this doesn't help enough, mine is apart, and I can take some pics
that will probably solve the issue. But it will take me a day or two
to get them from camera to posting. Let us know

ok so the only problem I'm having right know is taking off the knee panel right below the steering wheel. I see it has 2 torq screws any more. Its not going smooth for me. I need some pics maybe.

What does that mean? Not trying to be a jerk, but if you want accurate help, you need to be clear in what you are asking. Proof read what you are typing before you click on the submit button. Be as detailed in your descriptions as you can possibly be. Back to the question, were you able to removed the panel beneath the steering column?

no that's what I'm having trouble removing. The panel beneath the steering column is giving me big trouble. Can someone tell me how many bolts are in that knee panel total. Thanks

Camaros have 5, I imagine yours is probably the same. Two on the edges closest to you and three, center, right and left edge on the back end. The two closest ones came with plugs to cover the screws that have to be pried out first. It's also attached with clips that connect it to the piece right behind it that covers the area above your feet.
Just squeeze the back side and they slide right out

I don't remember those plugs you are talking about ever being on my car. Do you have them on your car?

No, I guess people more often than not either lose them or don't bother putting them back in, but they came that way. Some JY cars still have them though

And the next two.

If somebody needs some other views, I've taken a pretty good collection
during the resto process, and am happy to help when needed.

Re: need help removing cluster panel on 91 firebird

I know this is an old thread but I'm looking for pics of newer 3rd gens (1991-1992) with the dash off.

I am in the midst of taking the dash out for a cage install.

I can't decide if taking the dash AND the wiring harness out is the way to go. Or leave the wiring harness in the car and just take the dash out. The problem is that with the 91's the bottom portion of the dash is riveted to the upper portion of the dash.
So other than busting every clip on the back end of the dash to get the harness out, and then pull it out all along the way from the passenger side.

Any help?
