Roll bar/cage

Hey guys I've been trying to search for what kind of cages/roll bars people are running in their street cars but have come up short. Any suggestions would be helpful and pics would be even better. I'm putting it in an 89 camaro with aftermarket seats. More of a track car now but it does see some road time every now and again.

Thanks in advance

Re: Roll bar/cage

Roll bars. Scream Race Car.

you will get alot of replys. from guys running what they think is the best set up.

down load. or get a Copy of the rule book (what ever body your racing in)
Drag Racing NHRA Rules can be looked up on the net. and what you need for what speed you will be running. sorta stuff..Good read.

and start shopping (you can always upgrade)

AutoPower Makes a good bolt in bar to start with. (you can add to it has you go) adding side bars to the main hoop and going from there.
S&W Race cars makes a Fantastic set of side bars.

just remember. with the 3rdgen camaros. you dont have to weld them in.
so you can go with the bolt is has well.
and swing out side bars are NHRA/IHRA ..OK

you will see stuff like
with back seat..
without back seat
and info telling you whats safe and what they think is not safe.
remember guys have been installing roll bars in cars for the last 50 years.and no 2 are alike!
Some look Good!..Some not so Much. its a big market.

STAY WITH the same size tubing (if upgrading)

Good Luck and Have Fun!

Re: Roll bar/cage

I always wanted a Wolfe Roll Bar in my 2002 Camaro. Would be fantastic if they made the 6 points for 3rd gen.

Here are a couple of examples. From a full cage to a 6 point with swing outs.

Re: Roll bar/cage

Don't have better pictures off hand but this is what I did (BTW, those holes are patched up now, pics taken a year ago...). Bars are completely custom. Instead of a swing out bar we "bent" the bar so it clears the arm rests. We then reinforced the bend with a diagonal to the base of the main hoop (you can see it on the far side of one of the pics). Easy to get in and out of the car (front seats of course). We also moved the main hoop back to hide it a little, this is to reduce the racer look on the street (with interior the bar tucks up really tight and is hard to see in a casual traffic check).

We observed much better chassis rigidness with the roll bar--which was the point for me (we did the bar before the frame connectors as part of the experiment). It was even better with the frame connectors (which tie into the roll bar).

I am sure it will not pass NHRA (we did use the correct tubing throughout but did not follow the book otherwise) but I have no need for that either, just taking the flop out (T-Top car). Not that there is anything wrong with building to the rule book of course, it is just about what you want/need to achieve.

Sorry again for the ugly pics...

Thanks.
It was not a kit but built from scratch and installed by a local chassis shop in W. Babylon LI, MI Performance - http://miperformance.com/
I went that route because I don't know how to weld (not now at least) and I wanted the best fit possible.

Re: Roll bar/cage

this is a bolt in AutoPower NHRA/IHRA ok
before the swingout side bars
(swing out to make it easy getting in and out)

note: back seat will not fold up (dont need it)
and you still have lots of room in back.

Re: Roll bar/cage

I still have the back seats in my car. they dont weigh enuff to take out plus the weight is close to the rear wheels..
The Ultima "GTA" front seats weigh 100lbs together 60# for the dr 40# for the pass. Now those should be removed !
