91 RS gauge cluster

Whats up people? I recently purchased a 91 RS that is totally original. I have had the car for two weeks now and am trying to work out all of the bugs. My tachometer stays pegged at 7 with the car running or not. My oil pressure gauge flutters around a little but for the most part is pegged as well. Everything else in the cluster functions normally. I'm hoping that some of you have had this problem and know of a quick inexpensive fix. Please help! Thanks!

Re: 91 RS gauge cluster

you can buy a used gauge cluster from ebay or a junk yard, or go with an aftermarket piece for around 500.

Re: 91 RS gauge cluster

Thanks guys! I would really like to try to keep the original cluster in the car if possible. I'm thinking of maybe having it rebuilt if I can get it done for a reasonable price. It would be nice if it were something simple that I was overlooking like a bad wire or something along those lines. BADASS I would love to see some pics of that B4C.. I went and looked at one here locally. Nice car but it was a little out of my price range and missing the original transmission. One day, right?

I picked up my b4c when I was 18 for a steal of a price. At the time i didn't really realize I had a some what rare car so I started modding it. Now its basically a dedicated drag car ( still in the works) Sometimes i wished i never touched it. it would no doubt be worth a lot more if i hadn't haha

Yeah man! I think one day those cars will really be worth some bucks. That's why I like the RS models. They look the same. Hopefully one day mine will be somewhat of a B4C clone, only LS powered.

Re: 91 RS gauge cluster

Try using your dimmer switch, does it make the tachometer fluctuate?

Re: 91 RS gauge cluster

My 92 tach is doing the same thing. However all the other gauges work fine. i started taking the trim piece off from around the cluster and if i pushed on the lower right hand corner under the tach several of the guages would all peg out as Deeznuts 94 said his was doing. I figure this was due to the dash screws being loose or maybe just a fluke?? I pulled my cluster out an inspected the back side circut panel (all looked great) put the panel back in and my tach still doesnt work. when the car is being started it floats over to 1 or 2000 rpm but when the car starts it flies back to 7 and stays. I thought the rpm was controlled by the wire going to the distributor ?? i have checked all conections and inspected the wiring (all is good) there MUST be something that can be corrected inside the tach to correct this problem?????? I do not want to sink 500 dollars into another cluster that is used and may have the same issue a month after its bought.....LOL

Re: 91 RS gauge cluster

I'm not sure rough? I'll be heading out to the car wash in a while and I will give it a try and let you know. Escapegoat you can find a good used one for fairly cheap. Everyone wants the Z28 cluster so its more expensive. If you post an ad on here for one I'm sure someone will reply, or check your local junkyards. . I still havent repaired mine yet. Hopefully I will have the time next weekend to pull it out and try to diagnose the problem.

Re: 91 RS gauge cluster

I had the same problem with my 91. Check out this thread https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/elec...meter-fix.html
Way above my skill level, I bought a cluster from a guy on the board here and everything works good now.

Re: 91 RS gauge cluster

Yeah.... no. Haha! The dimmer switch thing didnt work for me. Most of the complaints I have read, the tach is pegged only with the engine running. Mine stays that way running or not. It does move around a little, but only at idle and it only moves a tiny bit. Hopefully I will have some time this weekend to play with it a little. I was hoping that this would be a common problem with a quick fix. Instead its a common problem with no fix. Under heavy throttle my oil pressure will read around the normal range but as soon as you lift from the throttle it goes right back to the max.. Thanks for the link Mike! I checked it out, and yep its a lot out of my skill level too!

Re: 91 RS gauge cluster

When i put in the new cluster it was pegged at 7 grand (from shipping I guess) I figured it would reset when I started it. Nope. I took it back out and rotated the whole cluster till the needle went to zero and reinstalled, worked fine than. Maybe try that.

Re: 91 RS gauge cluster

Mine works fine, but my other 92 rs had that problem. Turned out to be a bad ground. If all else fails call a dealer, say you just moved there and got the cluster from a dealer in another state, and ask what they they think it is.

Thanks guys! It is pretty cool to have a place like this where we can all talk and compare our cars and issues with them. On my way to the tint shop!!!

Re: 91 RS gauge cluster

Still no progress on the gauge cluster. I was going to try this passed weekend but my plans ended up changing at the last minute. As of right now its my daily driver, so it has to be a weekend project. Yes my reverse lights work fine. I recently changed the oil and my oil pressure gauge starting acting a little different. Still not functioning properly though. I don't know? On another note I got the car back from the tint shop and it looks great! A gauge cluster and ttop seals are in my near future I think.

Re: 91 RS gauge cluster

If it turns out that you want to get a replacement, I've got a clean that came out of a 305TBI so everything matches, and I always swap it out for the one in my car to test and insure that everything works properly. Just LMK and get me your email address for pics and other info, Henry

To the OP, I had the same issue. As some one else posted in a link, there is a chip that sits on the bottom right of the cluster. That is the culprit! You could take it out, sauder a new resistor on & that woud fix it. I had a buddy of mine fix his this way. He was going to fix mine, but never had time. I ordered a cluster from Henry above, stand up guy & the cluster he sent me was perfect! I did swap out the old lights for LED's. What a diff! I recommend Henry if you go the route of another cluster. Good luck!!

I HIGHLY recommend you swap out the bulbs if you take the old cluster out. If you do not want to go the LED route, at least replace with stock NEW bulbs.

Re: 91 RS gauge cluster

Thanks 3318! I had my cluster out of the car this weekend finally.. No luck in the repair. I will be buying one from Henry soon. I have to do my ttop seals first. Which eibach springs did you buy 3318? How much of a drop? I was thinking about the 1.5 drop springs and some C6 wheels for my car. Did your wheels fit without spacers? what size tires front and rear? Thanks to everyone that has replied to this post! Its nice to know that other people love these cars as much as I do!

Deez,

My car has the eibach sportlines. Here are the exact ones, I got them from Hawk's 3rd gen:
http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/ca...plication.aspx

The front has 2 inch spacers & the back has a 4th gen rear, so no spacers. The wheels actually sit a few millimeters in on the rear vs. the pic you see (currently). My sig pic has the 4th gen rear w/1 inch spacers. The stuck out a little too much for my taste.

So again, the fronts have 2 inch spacers & the rear NO spacers with a 4th gen rear.

The wheels are 17x8.5F's & 18x9.5R's. The tires are 245/45/17 up front & 275/40/18 in the rear. If you have any other questions just ask.

PS Your screen name is hilarious!!!!

Re: 91 RS gauge cluster

Haha! Thanks 3318! I grew up in the ghetto in the early 90's. If you know anything about snoop dogg it is one of his songs lol. Thanks again for your help! I have been emailing back and forth with Henry from above and will be ordering my cluster early next week. I have only owned this car since March. Slowly working through all of the bugs. T-top seals next, a tired 700R4 replacement and some suspension work are coming soon. I have been looking around for an LS motor as well. I think I will be going with an LQ4 or an LQ9.. Preferably the 6 liter. Thanks for the link. I found some springs at Summit Racing $170, pretty sure I will be going with those. As for the wheels, yours look great. The 2002 SS SLP wheels are what I want but they are impossible to find. Keep checking my pictures I will be posting progress as it happens.
