Power Window Regulator?

Does anyone know of a good source for these? Mine sounds like it stripped out, I haven't gotten it off yet to check it though.

Re: Power Window Regulator?

try rockauto.com they've got super cheap parts. I'd recommend a shop in south LA to you but it'd probably be cheaper to ship the stuff than the gas to get you there. rockauto also occasionally has closeouts and discounts they'll email you products for your car if you sign up for the mailing list. As for the regulator, well, good luck getting into the side of that door its a real pain in the *** I'd encourage you to enlist the help of a friend. I managed to get the thing off the tracks with me and my buddy both arm deep in the door panel. The regulator is likely welded to the motor if I recall my install, but I'm not for certain on that, so you might consider replacing both at the same time, or simply because the motor is probably going to go soon. I can't speak for the passengers side though...mine was the driver's. Be careful with the door handle module when you're removing the door panel or it will be wobbly after putting it back together (took me two tries to make it right). I paid somewhere around $30 for the new motor and regulator plus about 8 in shipping.

Re: Power Window Regulator?

Yeah, I looked at Rock auto, I think the regulator assembly was ~$220 IIRC. I will definitely replace the motor also, it appears to be the cheap part.

Re: Power Window Regulator?

take a look at the regulator. It's some serious beefy steel with serious teeth and a spring. Chances are your problem is just the window motor.

Part Number? I sure can't find any for third gens, I searched Firebird, Trana Am, and Camaro.

I will take a look at it once I get time to actually pull it out of there, hopefully that is the case.

Re: Power Window Regulator?

We have the replacement power window motors for these cars by not the regulators. Here's a link to the window motors if you just need those.

Re: Power Window Regulator?

I think my window regulator is not working, I can hear the motor but the window does not move up or down. One time it did "catch" and it was working for a while but now it does not move at all. I am able to move it manually by grabbing on to the window but as I drive it slowly moves down especially when I hit bumps!

I'm assuming I need to replace the window regulator, does anyone have any tips?

I'm not 100% sure about the internal construction of the window motor itself, but it's almost a guarantee that if it's like the windshield wiper, headlight, and hatch motors, it's got a metal motor gear driving a nylon gear that drives the gear for the regulator. Either that, or the gear on the inside of the window regulator gear (the driven gear inside the motor housing) is cheap metal that has been eaten away. So, more than likely, one of the gears inside the motor is stripped out and can't be driven any more. I can almost guarantee that the regulator itself is fine since it's made of pretty thick steel.

Re: Power Window Regulator?

Mine ended up being the motor, I got a remanufactured unit from OReilly. I think it was about $32. Do a bit more searching, there are some posts about where to drill the inside door sheet metal to get to the rivets holding the assembly together. The new motor should include screws to replace them or you could get the stuff to re-rivet it together. I put loctite and lock nuts on the screws.

Joe - the regulator in these cars is not like what you would imagine in a modern car with a cable driving the mechanism. It is a huge scissor mechanism with a gear attached and a giant spring. More then likely, the motor is shot. I haven't heard too many cases besides collision mishaps that can mess up the regulator. Take the door apart and check it out. It is probably the motor. As stated above - you could drill a few holes in the sheetmetal to remove it or go the few extra steps to remove the whole regulator to change out the motor. Your call.

Yeah, I'm having a similar issue.. My window will roll down three inches or so, but when it gets all the way up or all the way down (3 inches) it makes an awful popping sound:

That is 100% what mine was doing, you need to replace the motor.
