Toe board insulation/padding

OK, so after pulling out my carpeting, I noticed a toe board/ firewall insulation. it is a rubber membrane with a jute backing. Mine was soaked with water and moldy. Does somebody make a replacement for this? I have searched and cannot come up with a match.

Re: Toe board insulation/padding

That's the Mass Backing separating from the carpet. You should find the source of the water leak before replacing the carpet.I got my carpet from http://www.classicindustries.com/,It just so happens that their offering a 20% discount until April 2nd,use code MAD13.
Sorry, but I got my carpet from 1A not Classic,Classic still has the discount but,1A has free shipping.

Maybe I didn't do the best job of describing it. It is definitely a separate piece from the carpet. It goes from the bottom of the dash down to where toe floor pan turns up to toe board. It is very much like mass backing, but it is a separate piece. It may have been part or the original carpet package, but the new carpet I have now does not include this piece. I would include a picture, but the piece is now gone.

Don't know what that is,maybe the previous owner had installed that piece in to prevent the carpet from getting wet.Did you find the source of where the water is getting in yet??

It's the lower half of the factory firewall insulator. Goes from about halfway up the firewall down under the first few inches of the carpet.

Probably going to be rust holes under it. Especially where the wheel wells join up. And may also be a water leak from the cowl. If the jute padding wrapped around the cowl is also wet, that's another clue.

Re: Toe board insulation/padding

The reason why yours is wet and nasty is likely the same reason why mine was wet and nasty.

Your windshield leaks and/or your cowl leaks and/or your firewall leaks and/or your floorboard leaks and/or your roof leaks.

If your windshield has never been replaced, odds are the seal looks like this:

Size: 201.3 KB

Your windshield needs to come out.
50-50 chance it will break during the process.
Patch all holes, and seal windshield around all edges.
One mistake in re-installation, and it will still leak.

Nobody said this was going to be easy.

Yep, that's it. it seems to be nothing more than a leak sponge. But it the leak is solved, I would like to replace it

Re: Toe board insulation/padding

Once you spend about a million dollars and a thousand hours plugging/patching leaks, you can put down dynaliner as replacement for the nastified-hazmat-jute. If you want rubber over your dynaliner, you can put down a layer of dynamat over top of the dynaliner. Once you have done that you can put down new carpet with mass-backing. At that point, the sound of the car self-destructing beneath your feet should be less disturbing, and with that many layers it should take quite a few gallons of water in the floorboard before you will be sure that its still leaking.

Mine should be back from leak-patching someday.

I'm going to go with magnets and paper towels for flooring until I'm sure it doesn't still leak.

If you are dead-set on having a hard(ish) plastic in the drivers's floor, you can make your own sort-of replica of that thing you had to carve out of your existing floorboard by getting a sheet of ABS plastic and a heat-gun.

If you need to join sheets of ABS, I undetstand that the same glue that is used to join PVC pipe may work.

Here's pop-up-laden link of a guy who fabricated a similar sort of thing with ABS.

Re: Toe board insulation/padding

Yes, this stuff really blows. I have about half of my insulator pulled up on the passenger's side to keep it from getting wet until the weather warms up enough I can pull out the stuff necessary to run a new bead of seam sealer along the cowl. I may or may not follow that up with bedliner... I haven't decided yet, but I do need to get another can anyways.

I didn't buy my 91 vert for a quick fix. i did it for a project. I knew it would cost me some change. I just want to put most of the original stuff back in. I can't believe that somebody does not make a AM replacement for this. I know it is not needed, but it was there for a reason

If you can find a decent car in a junkyard that's been closed up (as in still has doors and windows), you may be able to get a decent one. It just takes forever to get at the thing. I saved mine out of the 87 for the 88. Only difference between being the upper cowl insulator that was for an A/C car out of the 87 and non-A/C in the 88, which I had to cut.

The few junkyards here in Northern Jersey have been picked clean of Third Gens. And if there are any left, they are unrecognizable. Guess I will have to fab myself one out of mass back, or go without. Posted from Thirdgen.org App for Android

Re: Toe board insulation/padding

You can go to Home Depot or somewhere and get some carpet pad... It's the same thing as the carpet backing, and probably cheaper.
