Grant 870 steering wheel change
I've always wanted to replace my airbag wheel for something that looks better. I'm looking into the Grant 870 wheel found here.
What installation kit should I go for? Grant doesn't offer them for the airbag cars so I'm not real sure.
EDIT: Found it cheaper at... Summit. Like always. LINK

You need the install kit for an 82-89 camaro or firebird. It will fit with a little bit of trimming of the cover plate in the kit. Lots of people here have done it, myself included.

Re: Grant 870 steering wheel change
Ok. I read on some guys' posts about how they've trimmed part of the steering column with a dremel. Makes more sense to trim the piece in the kit.
Is it the 3196 kit?

Definitely trim the piece in the kit, not your column. I believe that is the right part number. I did mine 5 years ago, so I'm not 100% sure.

Re: Grant 870 steering wheel change
The Grant 870 is 13 3/4". I think the stock wheel is something slightly over 14". As someone that has one of these, would you say the difference in steering is minimal or noticeable?
Also, I don't want the GT Grant symbol on my horn, but the only option that I've seen to change it for our cars is the blank or Pontiac symbol buttons. Is there anywhere that offers a custom Firebird symbol? If not, do you think a symbol from the center caps or the 82-89 wheel would be the right size to fabricate it in?

Re: Grant 870 steering wheel change
Bump, do I have any options other than blank/Pontiac symbol for horn caps for this wheel? Maybe a horn cap from an 82 steering wheel will fit?

Re: Grant 870 steering wheel change
If you have power steering you shouldn't notice a difference in steering effort. If you've got manual steering however, it's noticeable.
As for the center cap, I don't think the wheel cap emblems will fit. I have a blank center cap on my wheel and the center is dished and only about 1.5" in diameter. I'd have to measure to be sure. I just painted mine the same color as the body. Try checking in eBay, there are all kinds of emblems and center caps on there, you might be able to find something that fits.
I've also seen a firebird cap before, but can't remember where.

Re: Grant 870 steering wheel change
My original plan was to get an early 80s steering wheel to put on but the prices are crazy for one that is worth it. I like the way the 870 looks. I saw many people got the challenger with 4 spoke. Are there other Grants that people were more successful in putting a firebird emblem on?

You could try looking for a 2nd gen firebird horn button. I believe they had the firebird on them and you could cut it off and mount it on your wheel.

Re: Grant 870 steering wheel change
That sounds like a good idea. Do you know the diameter of the symbol on the challenger series wheel?

Not off the top of my head, no. I can measure mine later tonight and let you know.

Re: Grant 870 steering wheel change
That would be awesome. I'll probably have to do some fab work to put the symbol on the horn button. Thanks in advance!

Re: Grant 870 steering wheel change
Measured the horn button. The center recessed section is about 1.5" in diameter, the entire face is about 2.5" in diameter.

Re: Grant 870 steering wheel change
Ok. So the symbol itself is 1.5" and the whole button is 2.5"?

Re: Grant 870 steering wheel change
The whole face of the button is 2.5". The sides flare out from front to back, so measuring from the back side it's probably closer to 3"

Hopefully if anything this is a tad BIGGER and I'll be able to shave it down to size. Maybe it'll be the same size though. Waiting on an email. Unless anyone has the answer to that.
