SEM Plastic Paint... Black to Palomino

So my 91 Formula had black interior ( I read that the later cars with black had some UV protection in the plastics) but it was in pretty good shape to begin with.... I never liked the "true" color Kitt was, it seemed sun faded and too light for me.... I always preferred the Ferrari Tan / Peanut Butter color more, it really pops with the black car....

SEM Paint.... $120+ for what you see... I think I will need more Color Coat, being it took about 5 light color coats for total coverage for those 2 pieces...

I first used TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate), spray, scrub, rinse, then the SEM Soap, scrub, rinse. I then sprayed on the SEM Plasti prep and wiped it off, towel was pretty much clean by then.... Everyone says this is a great product, but must be prepped....

You have to check your plastics with acetone, if it smears, you use the sand free primer, it it doesn't smear, like mine, use the Adhesion promoter...

Picture after 3 cleanings and ready for adhesion promoter...

It made everything less shiny and have a gray dulness to it, so it seemed to remove all the armor all, etc...

Adhesion promoter, a light coat, 5 minutes later, a wet coat, then 15 minutes later (no more than 30 minutes), apply the Color Coat.

Color coat must be applied in light mists, 5 minutes apart. It took about 5 coats to go from black to palomino. I did an extra on the edges. Paint is easy to work with and blends in well. I use to have an Eastwood spray can gun, my finger hurts a bit

Here is an up close pic in the sun...

It has a nice sheen, not too shiny, not to dull.... I'm happy with it so far...

I have some "beechwood" carpet and headliner that look really good with this color and I also have custom fabric to redo the seats...

Expensive, slow and time consuming procedure... but i did it (well, I have a few more pieces to go... but closer to finishing this ride...

Re: SEM Plastic Paint... Black to Palomino

Andy G, it is Hot... It's Florida! About 70 degrees

Well, looks like I'll be buying more Palomino color coat...
1 can did the first 2 pieces you saw, both front kick panels and the 2 rear seat belt boxes (later cars)...I actually did 1 light coat from a new can on the last 4 pieces...

I managed to also do the 2 lower rear plastics (below the speaker / b pillar) still a little left in the can, but I don't want to run out mid paint...

I found my can gun!!!

I'm going to pickup 3 more cans of Palomino, I have the 1 big piece from B pillar to rear, the other B pillar, the trunk wall piece, and the 1 trunk side where the spare goes... I'm hoping 3 is enough... but maybe 4... I'll post later...

I seem to have enough prep and adhesion promoter, since it's about 2 sprays each piece vs 5 color ones...

You could have bought a cheaper can of plastic primer and then hit it with paint. It is always a pain in the neck going from dark to light.

Yes... I knew it would be a lot of coats to go from black to light...
But I didn't want to change the recipe that works...

Re: SEM Plastic Paint... Black to Palomino

It works - I have used it before. SEM makes a flexible plastic primer that works great, and the paint adheres to it like it was just another coat of paint. I am sure you did your research because you got all the other stuff you need. You would just should it with a coat or two of the primer after cleaning the part and applying adhesion promoter. I sprayed a few things that needed a color change with that and the results were great.
It will be fine the way you did it also, but you will use less paint with a primer. Just another option. Believe me - i know where you are at right now. I was a pro with a spray can when I was done with my plastics. The payoff is the finished product.

Re: SEM Plastic Paint... Black to Palomino

SEM sells a sand free primer, but my type of plastic didn't need it..
I followed their directions, test plastic with Acetone... if it smears, use the sand free primer, if it doesn't smear, like mine, use the adhesive promoter instead....

It is looking really good...

Re: SEM Plastic Paint... Black to Palomino

I'm really liking the color/shade and from the pics the sheen looks perfect. Not too much shine or too dull, like you said.

Wouldn't mind seeing some pics of the carpet, headliner and seat fabric along with one of the painted pieces for a comparative.

SEM products rock! It looks like you did it exactly like you should. I used Dawn dish soap on my panels and then shot em. They came out awesome!

Re: SEM Plastic Paint... Black to Palomino

I used Simple Green detergent on the panels. I wanted to make sure I got every bit of oil and residue off. I also scrubbed them with a scotchbrite pad to dull the surface a bit to make sure the paint could get some 'bite' to the original surface.

Re: SEM Plastic Paint... Black to Palomino

I'm into my 5th can of color... so if you're going to go black or dark to light, you may need 5 cans... You may be able to get away with 1 can of prep and adhesion promoter... after finishing all my pieces (except the door sills, which I have aluminum ones), there is a bit left of the prep and adhesion promoter and for sure enough color in the 5th can for 2 door sills

More pics later!

Re: SEM Plastic Paint... Black to Palomino

Per AndyG's request (I did call him for mechanical advice tonight) ...

Keep in mind, there is a bright light on the left side of the picture, so all the stuff on that side looks lighter...

This picture...
Above the passenger kick panel, not squarely cut, is the fabric I'm having my seats done in... I didn't like the velour (or it's colors, lighter 1 way, darker the other), etc...

To the right of that is a square of the beechwood carpet... i have a molded one for the passenger area and bought spare for doors / trunk area (going to have subs / amps)...

The "tube" to the right... the top part is a tweed... I was thinking of covering the plastics in that, but decided against it...Though I've seen it done nice, you can't just wipe it clean...
Below that tweed, on the same roll, is the beechwood headliner material which will also cover the sail panels.... the picture seems to show a greater difference than in real life, but it looks really good to me in person...

Re: SEM Plastic Paint... Black to Palomino

Looks like a good match to me.

I agree with you about the tweed, too. I think it may be better without it but that is just me.

Nice progress!
