late 91 through 1992 year models had competely different pull-down mechanisms. Check out top-downsolutions.com, Lon is a member here and sells parts as well as rebuilt units of each kind.

no...no way to make it work...unless you want to grind off the old mount then grind one off of the 86-91 and weld it on your car.
Re: hatch release wont bolt up
You can't put your old unit on until you can spring for a rebuild kit? I think they're like $100. Take the part back to the yard and see if they have the right one? I feel your pain buddy, but when you're fixing up a nearly antique car, you are going to pay IF you can find the parts.

when i bought the car it didnt have anything at all it has no unit at all so my hatch is open to anyone walking by the po doesnt even know were it is and wont get it for me
Re: hatch release wont bolt up
I once had the idea to get the latch and mounting bracket out of an 82-84 and have it welded in my car. These units are so prone to breaking and not going to get any cheaper or easier to find. I got a used unit and will baby it until it needs replaced again.
