a modified take on cup holders

I am currently in the design stage of a (sort of) new cup holder design. I actually got the idea from watching a video from Fbodywarehouse that sells these things for second gen birds. Iv done the search thing and have not seen this idea yet.

Here is what I am doing.

I am taking, borrowing, modifying this exact idea and modifying for 3rd gen birds.

So far only the templates are made. But it does seem like it will work.

Thoughts?

Re: a modified take on cup holders

It's a good idea in theory, I just have 2 concerns. 1 - the console lid on these cars(at least mine) doesn't stay up very well. If it falls down when braking, you could have a big mess. 2 - for people with manual transmissions, your elbow could hit the front up when shifting to 2nd, 4th, and reverse. I know mine sometimes hits the console lid, and my arms aren't particularly long.

Re: a modified take on cup holders

im not real cazy about the drinks going inside the console but the no modification thing is a big plus for all the guys not willing to cut holes or screw into there car to get cupholders i would think a nice clean part like the one in the video would sell if priced right

Re: a modified take on cup holders

I would think it would work fine for the 85-92 Firebirds... our consoles are not as deep as that appears, but its a neat idea...

Re: a modified take on cup holders

I would like to have a cup holder my car came with them on the doors but it seem like I spent more money on buying cupholders then I did on drinks to fill them anyway I dont think I would like that one it would be odd trying to reach behind you ever time you wanted your drink I would like to have one that goes where the ashtry is

Re: a modified take on cup holders

I would seal the area around the cup a least.Otherwise a spill will ruin anyting inside the consol.A stop on the back to keep the lid from closing on the cup/s when braking wouldnt hurt.

Re: a modified take on cup holders

Not great for Camaro's as our lids flip up from the back, not the side like the T/A's

Re: a modified take on cup holders

If there was a way to make the lid slide straight back like the newer cars have that would work. I've seen Hondas that slide back and also open up like our lids do.

Re: a modified take on cup holders

Im sure there is a "way". Its a just a matter of engineering, practicality, tooling, time, money, and want.

prototype is in. Holes are only 2 1/2". That is small, working it out.

Re: a modified take on cup holders

you don't need a cup holder, that's why you always have a passanger, to hold it for you.
