Hi everyone, I did'nt know where else to ask this so here I go. I need recommandations for a toddler car seat for a 1985 Camaro. It's just my son who is two and I. We Will be the only people in the car. I know There are models that fit, I see even smaller cars with carseats. Thanks. I hope to pass the car on to him when I've gone to the great junkyard in the sky.

 

Good luck is all I can say, you'll just have to see if a place will let you "test fit" seats. Since there's no "middle" back seat there really isn't a good place to put the seat so that you can actually access it.

 

Babys'R'Us will let you test any seat they have. Which is nice. The unfortunate part is our third gens do not have the anchors most new seats use. You would need a car seat that allows for seat belt straps (many still do).

Put them on the passenger side as not to make you have the driver side up so far.

This is a preference obviously, but being third gens do not have airbags I would highly suggest rear facing as long as possible (even up to 4 years of age). I know it would be even more inconvenient in a Camaro for rear facing, but specialists state the vertebrae of the child are not developed enough until 3-4 years for an accident. babycenter.com strongly suggests 3 years old as a minimum. *steps off baby soap box*

My 3 yr old loves my IROC by the way. She will say "I wanna go noisy car".

My daughter is 4 and regrettably rides in the back seat of my camaro in just a booster seat(flat bottom, no back),i'm not comfortable doing this so it's never a long ride usually once a week or so to the farmers market or dinner, obviously with her in the car i take everything as easy as i can and check for other cars constantly

I want a high back booster, and will be buying one soon


but for a two year old, i would go with the best option(price range) that has good side impact protection, and will convert into a standard high back booster later(this is what i wish i had done)

as long as the seat itself is tall and skinny, something along the lines of this will fit

Thank you both for your suggestions. I knew it was possible and had been done. I've met many people who rode in these cars when they were young and they turned out fine,they also said that their parents were very safe drivers and took every safe driver course they could. They didn't go out in extremely bad weather and abided all safety rules. I also see car seats in both the new Camaro,Mustang and Challenger none of which are known for large back seats. Thanks all.

 

Take a look at the Chicco Next Fit. We researched seats for about 3 months (hence my knowledge above) and it has the best safety ratings and side impact protection. (looks like an egg). The only negative is that it's a bit wider than your average car seat and it has a very pricey tag on it. I guess you can ask for $300 when you get all the top ratings..

 

This hasn't been mentioned but when you buy a seat it should come with a flat metal thing that loos like the capitol letter "I". This enables the seat to be cinched down with the type of seat belt in our cars.

The manual should tell you how it's used. Basically it works like the buckle on a helmet by locking both shoulder and lap belts together on the retractor side.

I thought about fabbing some hooks that can be bolted in. Is the factory seat belt bolts and using the hook option on the baby seat. This will eliminate having to use the "I" bracket.

Thanks again everyone. I Will look into all the suggestions and get the best one I can. One reason I bought the car was that it was affordable and worth putting money into to return it to better than new. It Will get put away or in the shop during winter. I Will Find a beater for that.

 

I've just been searching for an answer on this same issue. I only want to take my 3 year old son for one or two rides this summer, not as a regular occurrence. I'm only going to do it if I can find a way to safely install a tether anchor mount. In this old thread, https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...ftey-seat.html, someone talked about using the T-top U-clip behind the back seat. If my memory is any good at all, this clip is held in by some tiny #8 sheet metal screws. I wouldn't use that as the tether anchor.

This thread doesn't seem to be getting much traffic, but hopefully someone will have something useful to offer... I did get one hit on my internet search of someone who went to a Chev dealership and they installed one for free, but I can't see that happening.
