Sound deadening on floor worth it?
Sound deadening on floor worth it?
One of the final details I've been going back and fourth over before I install my new carpet is sound deadening.
I'm going to be using Dynaliner my tranny tunnel all the way to the firewall for heat already. I will also be using Dynamat Xtreme on the insides of my doors behind the door panels.
The ACC replacement carpet I ordered with the jute insulation already attached to the bottom. Considering the cost of Dynamat Xtreme and the fact I'm still using jute insulation already, would it be worth it to use the Dynamat on the floor of my car? If not the entire floor, are there any places you would for sure suggest like the rocker panels, passenger firewall by the header collector, passenger floor over the exhaust, or rear cargo area? Of should I not worry about it.
I always thought my car was quiet for what it is and never much thought about it until I had the interior out. But I have gotten used to the how silent new cars are. Opinions?

Re: Sound deadening on floor worth it?
They actually make a lightweight version of it called Dynamat Superlight.
Is it really that heavy tho? Like would it add more than 50lbs doing an entire floor?

Re: Sound deadening on floor worth it?
The light weight version sounds good. I'm going with that.
I've used one box of the heavy stuff so far. I didn't weight the box but I still need at least one more box. That would be 50 lbs easy.

I just did the entire car with the dynamat extreme including floor, doors, side panels, wheel wells, everything. I used 2 boxes to cover everything. Yes, its heavy but definitely worth every dime. When I build the next bird, I will definitely do it again.

Re: Sound deadening on floor worth it?
I posted a similar question in the "convertible" section today.
I am getting ready to install My new carpet (passenger and trunk) with the mass backing, in My 'vert.
Two part question:
A): What does everyone think of installing a sound deadener on the floor of a convertible before laying the carpet? (I have a factory sound system, and old ears!)
B): What's everyone favorite sound deadening to use for verts?
Peace,

I'd be interested to know how much difference to expect also. Does it really drastically improve the overall noise level in the car?

Re: Sound deadening on floor worth it?
I used peel and seal roofing patch stuff on my car, along with reflex alum/bubble insulation.
I have all the weights on my computer out in the shop, so I can't post it right now but IIRC the peel n seal was around 6 lbs per roll, took 6 rolls to do the whole car front to back, and the reflex stuff is real light, maybe 5-8 lbs for enough to do full car.
Works great and worth doing IMHO.. No before and after to report as I put it down before engine was in.
Every little bit helps with 500+ hp gen 1 small block, 3" true dual pipes, 3 speed trans and 3.89 gears.

Re: Sound deadening on floor worth it?
Deadening mat is not what you're after if you genuinely want a quiet ride. You will be looking for MLV (mass loaded vinyl) and ccf. Dynamat is really only to quiet rattles, by converting vibration to low level heat. Yes, MLV is heavy (1-2 lbs per sq. foot). dynamat really only needs 25% coverage to be effective FOR ITS INTENDED PURPOSE. If you're covering your whole car with it (100% coverage) you're wasting money and material. Ignore the guy recommending peel and seal roof flashing tape. That **** is garbage, meant for roofs. It's about 25% as effective as actual deadener, and reeks of tar (it's asphalt based.. Enjoy next summer with it).

Re: Sound deadening on floor worth it?
Yes peel n seal is tar based, yes it smells for about 3 weeks.. Been in my car for 10 years now. Daily use for over half that time, no smell after the 1st 2-3 weeks.
Forget summer, I have 3" dual pipes touching floor pans in a few places, still do not get any smell.
No it's not as good as the stuff that's 6 to 8 times it's price, but it's been used and proven as a cheap way to reduce heat and sound.

Re: Sound deadening on floor worth it?
I would prefer Dynamat (or Second Skin) vs Jutte on the carpet....
I did the outside of rear wheel wells with Second Skin (with black sticky stuff and foil) then covered it with Second Skin brush on stuff... really quieted road noise back there...

Re: Sound deadening on floor worth it?
FWIW, GM produced a version of carpet that has a very thick rubber backing. From what I recall some parts were almost an inch thick. Nothing was attached to the floor directly.
I do know that most dampeners are strategically placed to reduce resonance in sheet metal which means that most noise can be reduced with much smaller quantities than covering the entire floor. From what I've read it has more to do with understanding the various methods and applying them correctly with the appropriate materials.
There are some good articles online that explain 3-4 different methods of soundproofing/sound deadening that explain why, how much, and where they should be used. Some are oriented towards selling products, however the information is still worth looking over.

Automotive soundproofing aims to decrease or eliminate the effects of exterior noise, primarily engine, exhaust and tire noise. The automotive environment limits the thickness of materials that can be used, but combinations of dampers, barriers, and absorbers are common
Four Lines of Attack
Control vehicle component - mostly panel - vibration and resonance.
Block air borne sound.
Decouple objects that would otherwise transmit vibration or make noise themselves by making intermittent contact (rattles).
Absorb.

I put some material in the doors on my 4th gen and it totally made a difference!
I plan to put some more on the floor and over the rear axle!

I used Second Skin Audio's - Damplifier.
Pretty much the same as all the other brands, they were just having a sale

Why don't you just order the carpet with the Mass Backing, it comes with the jute padding. dilemma solved. That's just me.

O Man,that's a shame.can you return it? I mean your going to trade it up in value.
Re: Sound deadening on floor worth it?
I think the Dynamat would be better anyway as there are lots of additional places I want to put it where the carpet doesn't go anyway. I'm still trying to figure out just how much I need and how much it will cost.

Re: Sound deadening on floor worth it?
92GTA, I also saw how they mentioned "Jute" and assumed that was mass backing but I had not ordered yet.
I planned to buy some material just to get areas that the carpet didn't cover, or to double up on areas!

Well let's pool some resources and see where online we can find the best price right now for Dynamat...
36 sq ft, $150.94 shipped:
