V6-V8 Instrument Cluster Compatibility

Quick question please. I have a 91 Firebird V8 120mph speedo 6 grand tach, would a cluster from an 89 Firebird V6 work correctly in my 91 V8? Everything looks the same except the tach is 8 grand on the V6 cluster.

Thank you!

Scott

Re: V6-V8 Instrument Cluster Compatibility

Simple answer, no, I don't believe it would work. I think the V6 and V8 tach's, in short, are different.

- Taking an educated guess, are you just swapping them to have the tach that goes up to 8k RPM? If so, I believe you can get an insert for 8K and have it recalibrated. Someone else will know more on that but I am 90% positive the v6 tachs don't work in V8 cars.

According to this eBay sale, it will work, but they may just be saying that. If it does, this may be cheaper and easier than buying a whole new cluster:

If not, here is a complete V8 cluster - 140MPH - 8K RPM:

Re: V6-V8 Instrument Cluster Compatibility

Thanks for the answers everyone! My Main reason for swapping is because of the faulty gear issue that plagues these models. My Odometer and trip meter have stopped working. I have yet to find anyone in my area that can address this issue without being way over priced. It is less expensive for me to swap clusters and go. My cluster works great speedo and all just that damn lube and gummed up and the gear has failed so my odometer and trip are dead. If anybody knows where to get the gear I need or service without sticking it to me that would be great!

Re: V6-V8 Instrument Cluster Compatibility

The V6 and V8 mechanism is actually the same in some cars IIRC. It would work, but with the V8 it would read High.

So you have a few options:
1) Leave it, and realize that your RPM is high,
2) Take apart the instrument panel and replace the pieces that are broken on your original. It actually is not that hard to do, everything simply screws together IIRC there is no soldering or anything.

Once you have the cluster out of the cars everything is pretty easy, For Example, to replace the tachometer you have to
1) Remove the **** at the end of the trip reset button
2) remove the clear cover & Black Bezel (8 screws)
3) Remove the 5 screws from the back of the tachometer, (remember where they go, there should be 3 silver, and 2 gold, the 3 silver are used to make a connection on the electronics board)
4) pull tachometer.

Reverse order to assemble.

I just did it for grins, it took me all of 5 min to disassemble, remove tach, and reassemble.

All of the gages should be basically the same thing. You have to remove the retaining screws (gold) from the gage, and the contact screws for the electronics), You just need a #2 Screwdriver.

Re: V6-V8 Instrument Cluster Compatibility

There are some differences to the gages for 1991, here is what I found

All of the lights, circuit board, screws, housing, lens, are all the same

Fuel Gage - all the same
Oil Gage - all US ones are the same - Different only For Export,
Temp Gage - all US ones are the same - Different only For Export,
Volt Gage - all US ones are the same - Different only For Export,

Speedo Head -
25088336 - V6, L03, LB9/A4, LB9/M5 (w/o perf gear), (120 Speedo)
25059699 - LB9/M5, L98. (140 speedo)

To convert the speedo from the 120 to 140 is easily done, remove and replace. Even more-so, to keep your miles accurate, all you have to do is disassemble the speedo (same procedure as in my precious post) and then swap out the Odometer portion, it is all plug and play. Obviously if you have a Canadian cluster it will throw it all off, you have to get metric -> metric, English -> English.

And I mentioned the differences in the Tachometers above.

Hope this helps

Re: V6-V8 Instrument Cluster Compatibility

Ive taken apart 2-3 Camaro speedos for a broken odo/trip odo.Not too difficult, but those were Camaro units. Not very familiar with FB units, worth a shot.

A junkyard... Buy another speedo and take the assembly or the pieces you need.
