Just manual, I'm afraid.

Did the odometer wheels keep track of mileage (meaning move with the dash odo?) or were they strictly manual and for reference purposes?
They were for reference purposes only... I never have used mine, they could have done without them personally.

So far our theory is that there are only three types of overhead console for any body style (3 for coupes and the same 3 for t-tops which are shaped differently). All I am asking from members is that you look at your overhead console and report the make and year of your car, whether or not it has labels identifying the buttons and the number of ribs in the flashlight chamber which are easily visible when the flashlight is removed. (Noone is asking anyone to pull the console and report on the type of wiring harness, or whether you have aluminum or nylon mounting bolts). A picture would be a bonus. The more members who respond, the better conclusions we can draw for the benefit of all who find this information of interest.

IMO, the odometer wheels are one of the most useless things ever released. They are manual, and I have seen folks replace them with switches and other things. In 1974, Lou Reed released Metal Machine Music, a 2 record set of guitar feedback recorded in his New York apt. He was quoted as saying something to the effect of " Noone has EVER listened to the whole thing all the way through. If they say they have, their a liar." I would venture to guess that the odometer wheels have been used by the same amount of folks!

I just got done reading the limited preview of the above book and it appears to be fairly authoritative and comprehensive. For each year a brief synopsis is followed by an often painfully repetitive listing of every option and option package available for each model year. 1984 is presented in it's entirety.

THERE IS NO LISTING OF AN OVERHEAD CONSOLE BEING OFFERED BY PONTIAC IN ANY FIREBIRD MODEL OR OPTION PACKAGE IN 1984.

This book is a researchers treasure, but I would recommend buying it in E-Book format, as it's greatest value will be as a SEARCHABLE document rather than a straight read.

I might have missed it if it already came up. But between the timing and early redesign it makes me wonder now if the upper console was designed for the Berlinetta and then later adapted to other Thirdgens?

An interesting question deserves another interesting question I have been meaning to ask. On the Berlinetta web site mentioned above it is stated that the digital dash package et al was in development a long time before release. Does anyone know if the 82 and 83 f-bodies have the holes pre-drilled in the roof?

Don't tease us, mantaguy. I can see the image of that digital cluster bleeding through...show us the other side!

Here's a quote from this thread:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/faq-...oth-types.html
"Disturb, my IROC had the holes pre-drilled, so it should be a simple matter of finding an appropriate console, cutting the headliner, splicing a bit of wiring, and mounting. "
They were still present in my 91 (even though 87 was the last year that consoles were offered), just had to be enlarged a bit. Either G.M. had to redesign the roof in 84 or the holes were there from day 1, just waiting for everything to come together as a package before releasing it.

As for the digital dash being available in 86, I recently saw a gorgeous 87 GTA (with digital dash) sell on EBay for the ridiculous amount of $2500! Thanks for the pic though, as I said, I LOVE that kind of stuff!
